Illinois Governor Pat Quinn made it official: Illinois will have a special Senate election just for the lame duck session. Thus Illinois joins Delaware and West Virginia (both having special elections) as the three states whose winners on election day will—barring a disputed election result—be seated for a lame duck session in December. A fourth, Colorado, is less clear but may also be in play.

The lame duck session looks increasingly likely—and increasingly ambitious. Sen. Kerry continues to stress that cap-and-trade will be on the agenda, and Sen. Harry Reid (who may be a lame duck himself after Election Day) confirmed it to the Netroots Nation audience, saying: “We’re going to have to have a lame-duck session, so we’re not giving up.”
Along with cap-and-trade, a lame duck will likely consider the recommendations of Obama’s deficit commission — a package that will include enormous tax hikes and could draw the support of some departing Republicans like Judd Gregg of New Hampshire George Voinovich of Ohio, and Robert Bennett of Utah.
And organized labor, seeing the lame duck as their last chance for a legislative return on their political investments for years, will also demand lame duck action.

Border Security
Los Angeles, CA
July 31, 2010 – 3:56 PM | by: Casey Stegall, FoxNews
For some time, many lawmakers have called for a military presence along the US/Mexico border to assist Border Patrol agents, as the drug and human smuggling cartel violence increasingly spills over into America. In May, President Obama answered the call and said he’d send in the National Guard to help out. On July 19th, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the deployment would happen on August 1st. However, I’m with my crew in Arizona and it appears the deployment date isn’t happening on Sunday after all. What’s the delay all about?
The National Guard Bureau and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) don’t see it as a delay. In fact, a spokesperson with the National Guard Bureau in Virginia says the August 1st date has been “over interpreted” and the DHS had given the Guard 90 days, beyond the first of August, to ramp up its numbers. When it’s all said and done, Arizona will get 524 soldiers. California is set to receive 260, 82 will head to New Mexico and 286 to Texas. The Arizona National Guard tells us it’ll most likely be late September or even early October before boots ever hit the ground in this state. The presence will first show up in New Mexico and Texas. A spokesperson says August 1st is the day they’ll begin the processing of soldiers… then it’ll take another several weeks to train them.

7 of America’s best and brightest who fought and died in Iraq and Afghanistan came out of Buchanan High School in the Central Valley community of Clovis, California. The 7th soldier to be killed, Brian Piercy, age 27, was buried on Friday.
There’s no sure answer as to how such a thing could happen. But many people in this Central Valley city have a theory. They say Clovis is an extraordinarily patriotic community and its children are raised on God and country, duty and honor. They’re willing to serve and willing to die, the same as Clovis’ generations who went before them.
Buchanan’s school colors are red, white and blue. The stadium is named Veteran’s Memorial. Former classmates and older siblings come back in uniform for campus visits. Friday night football games include a moment of silence for Buchanan’s fallen soldiers.
“The cheerleaders wear six stars on their uniforms. I guess it will be seven now,” said 15-year-old Julie Thaxter. “We’re not proud they died, but we’re proud they fought. It makes others from here even more ready to go and honor them. My brother wants to join. He’s 14 and he’s been set on it since he was 8.”

Well, either they were stupid or they were planned. Usually the folly of poorly done laws takes a bit longer than this to become recognized but in truth some of these were fairly predictable.

Captain Obvious
Let’s start off with the tremors in Obama care that have become palpable.
Stronger children’s coverage rules may raise insurance costs
Some families might face higher insurance premiums because of a requirement in the new healthcare law that plans cover sick children, state insurance commissioners said Friday.
The rule barring insurance plans from turning away sick children or denying coverage for specific illnesses for children who are already covered was one of the most popular parts of the new law.

We all know what the motive behind it was, and it has nothing to do with “human rights” or “splitting up families” or other such poppycock.

Most of the places I go to do serious business here in the U.S. require me to prove who I am. I am required to provide official identification if I want to:
- Vote
- Apply for a job
- Enter a contest
- Get a driver’s license
- Apply for a loan or any other type of credit
- Open a bank account and take money out of said account
- Write a check for goods and services at various businesses
In fact, when applying for employment, one of the questions almost every employer will ask is if you are eligible to work legally in the U.S., either as a full-fledged citizen or a legal alien with a green card.
The few times I’ve been pulled over by the police for driving infractions, I’ve also been asked to provide not just my driver’s license, but proof of having registered my car and proof of current insurance on that car.

Federal police officers stand outside the grounds of the Sandra Day O’Connor Court House Wednesday, July 28, 2010 in Phoenix moments after portions of Arizona’s new immigration law, SB1070, was blocked by a Federal Judge. (AP)
While opponents of Arizona’s strict immigration law are claiming victory in a federal ruling Wednesday that blocked most of the crackdown hours before its enactment, there’s still plenty left in the state legislation that supporters are cheering.
As the case is litigated, Arizona will be able to block state officials from so-called “sanctuary city” policies limiting enforcement of federal law; require that state officials work with federal officials on illegal immigration; allow civil suits over sanctuary cities; and to make it a crime to pick up day laborers.

CHICAGO — A federal prosecutor is detailing Rod Blagojevich’s alleged schemes as part of closing arguments in the former governor’s corruption trial, arguing that the 24 different counts all boil down to something simple: the former governor cannot exchange doing something for the state for something personal.
Prosecutor Chris Niewoehner said Monday that jurors heard Blagojevich try to shake down president-elect Barack Obama for a job in exchange for appointing an Obama friend to his U.S. Senate seat.
He said they heard Blagojevich trying to get a $100,000 campaign contribution in exchange for signing a racetrack bill and trying to shake down a children’s hospital for another contribution.
And, he argued, Blagojevich lied to the FBI about the alleged schemes.
Blagojevich has pleaded not guilty in an alleged scheme to sell Obama’s old Senate seat and plotting to illegally pressure people for campaign contributions.
Earlier in the proceedings Monday, the government asked to drop one count of wire fraud against Blagojevich’s brother, Robert, who has been implicated as helping the former governor.

Seemingly convinced that the Obama administration has not done enough to improve the country’s economic outlook, a survey of liberals and progressives show a majority believe the nation is now in the midst of a serious long-term economic decline.
The straw poll from this weekend’s Netroots Nation convention of activists reveals that 53% of those surveyed believe the current economic difficulties will last for the foreseeable future. Only 35% think a positive correction is right around the corner.
In a video statement played at the convention Saturday, President Obama talked about the timing of an economic recovery that seems to match up with these numbers. “It took years to get here,” Obama said. “It will take time to get us out.”
Nearly three quarters of the people surveyed believe Washington lawmakers should make the nation’s sluggish employment marketplace their top priority. Concerns over the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as other issues, lagged far behind.

Let’s NOT have a conversation about race. The calls for Obama to now make the Shirley Sherrod debacle a teachable moment fills me with panic that the president will retreat to the Oval Office and craft a soaring piece of oratory, instead of getting on with the humdrum business of firing the stumbling, bumbling members of his own team who, as the saying goes, can’t find their ass with either hand.

The liberal tax revolt, as the Wall Street Journal is calling it, is a very important topic — especially for investors and small-business entrepreneurs. And for new jobs.

The so-called revolt is comprised of three Democratic senators: Kent Conrad, Evan Bayh, and Ben Nelson. They want to extend all the Bush tax cuts. That includes taxes on the wealthy, or the top personal tax rate, the investment taxes on capital gains and dividends, and the estate tax.So is this revolt a game-changer, or merely wishful thinking?
With a strong pushback against the revolt by President Obama, Treasury man Tim Geithner, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, right now it looks like wishful thinking. But with Democrats getting badly paddled in various polls, you never know.
When Tim Geithner told me in a CNBC interview a few weeks ago about his 20-20 rule for the top tax rate on capital gains and dividends, I blogged that this was a good thing — in particular the story for dividend taxes, which could go to 39.6 percent. But no increase at all on investment taxes would be even better.
Let’s say you’re an investor who went long stocks in March 2009 and now has a long-term capital gain. You could sell right now at a 15 percent tax rate before it goes up to 20 percent. In a nutshell, this is the tax-hike story that has hung over the stock market this year like the proverbial Sword of Damocles. Year-end tax-related selling could still be in front of us.
So the liberal tax revolt is a very important issue for investors. It could mean a potential stock market rally in the second half of the year.
It’s also important for job seekers. Just take a look at the new Investor’s Business Daily poll by the accurate surveyor Raghavan Mayur. He notes that the average length of joblessness has soared to over 35 weeks, nearly two-times greater than the previous high for any downturn. And his polling data show that nearly one-half of households can be categorized as “job-sensitive.” That’s a huge number. These are the people who are either looking for work or fear that they may be laid off — or both.

Tell Chuck Norris to stand down. Invasion USA never happened.
I contacted both the Laredo Police Department and the Webb County Sheriff yesterday and debunked claims that Los Zetas gunmen from the Gulf Cartel has crossed the border from Mexico and took over two ranches in Texas. The Laredo Morning News also refuted the claim. Pro 8 News, the NBC affiliate, didn’t think enough of the absurdity to even comment on it… they found the installation of a new traffic light more newsworthy.

Absurdly, the same trio of sites that cried wolf are still sticking by their story, utter lack of credible evidence aside.
Cypress News publisher John G. Winder is sticking with the story, not because any additional evidence has been produced, but because the two sources for his version of the story, blog Digger’s Realm and Examiner.com’s San Diego (CA) County Political Buzz Examiner blogger Kimberly Dvorak are standing by their militiamen and anonymous police sources.
The original Cypress Times story? A re-publication of the original Digger’s Realm story.
The Digger’s Realm story? Two anonymous Laredo police sources and a San Diego California Minuteman named Jeff Schwilk who claims he got his information from… an anonymous Laredo PD officer.San Diego County Poltical Buzz Examiner Kimberly Dvorak? She claims her information also comes from two anonymous Laredo PD sources.
Are we noticing a pattern here? Every bit of of this claim, which has now scattered far and wide across the Internet, can be traced back to two anonymous police department sources of a police department that does not even have jurisdiction where the alleged invasion is taking place.
I invite Digger and Kimberly Dvorak to provide me with the names and contact information of their anonymous police sources. Perhaps the officers will provide me with the answers to two simple questions that neither blogger has apparently thought to establish yet.
- What are the physical addresses of the two ranches Los Zetas are said to have taken over?
- What are the names of the ranchers that have been displaced from their ranches by Los Zetas?
It seems rather odd that the stories promoting this claim say that people were forced out, but that neither has thought to name, locate, or try to interview the best possible eyewitnesses. That is what you would expect from competent journalists. We’re not seeing it here.

“As Governor,” Paladino said Wednesday in a radio ad, “I will use the power of eminent domain to stop this mosque and make the site a war memorial instead of a monument to those who attacked our country.”
I like this guy. I really like this guy. If the Supreme Court could rule, in the notorious 2005 decision Kelo v. City of New London, that the government could seize private property for a private developer and then never develop the property, surely Americans should be able to use eminent domain to designate the Burlington Coat Factory building a war memorial.

Andy Stern has just gained yet another job. Earlier this month, Stern also accepted a position on the Board of Directors for SIGA, a producer of anti-viral and biological warfare defense products.
But this job seems to have some policy teeth, with a think-tank title akin to Media Matters or the Center for American Progress, and it comes with perhaps some welcome company as well.

From The San Francisco Chronicle:
Andy Stern, former president of the Service Employees International Union, is joining Georgetown University’s public policy school as a research fellow.
Stern, 59, retired in May after building his union into one of the largest in the labor movement and increasing his own influence with President Barack Obama and Democratic lawmakers.
Stern will coordinate research at Washington-based Georgetown on wage reform, labor policy and retirement security, according to an announcement on the school’s website.
Stern of course maintains his position as an adviser on Obama’s deficit-reduction commission, a post to which Obama appointed him in February of this year.
This announcement comes only weeks after the announcement that Ed Montgomery, who has been serving in the White House as both a member of President Obama’s Task Force on the Auto Industry and as the Director of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers, will leave the Obama administration to take over as Dean of Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute. As very active leaders in the labor movement, both Mr. Montgomery and Andy Stern certainly know one another, and have shared visits at the White House for such activities as Obama’s White House Forum on Jobs and Economic Growth.

When men who didn’t serve in the armed forces pretend to be decorated war heroes, they’re labeled as “fake veterans” and can even be prosecuted for for what many call “stolen valor.” Recently, one Missouri politician began mailing campaign literature that leads me to believe he’s guilty of stealing the valor of members of the Tea Party Movement (i.e., freedom-loving patriots who sacrifice time, talent and treasure in an effort to save their country from socialism). In short, he’s guilty of “stealing tea.”

The politician at the heart of this matter is Scott Rupp, a RINO Republican running for re-election in Missouri’s 2nd Senatorial District.
This week, I learned from friends in the Tea Party Movement that Rupp had mailed a four-color piece that features a photo of him standing, arms crossed, in front of a bright yellow Gadsden (a.k.a., “Don’t Tread On Me!”) flag. In addition to featuring the flag that’s become a symbol of the Tea Party Movement, the photo features people holding up signs in the background.
The problem I have with Rupp’s brochure is that it gives voters a false impression about a candidate who, according to everyone with whom I’ve spoke, has never been to a single Tea Party event in the district — and I’ve attended dozens of ‘em!
Chuck MacNab, one of the leaders of an anti-socialism group in O’Fallon, Mo., shared feelings about Rupp’s tactics with recipients of his RITEON.org e-newsletter. An excerpt of that e-mail appears below:
As we see it, his flyer attempts to create an illusion. For instance, we have never seen him show up to meet people or to help out at a Saturday rally of K & N Patriots, the largest and primary “tea party” group that has met every Saturday for over a year in his District. Cynthia Davis, his opponent, has shown up to help out, hold a sign and converse with participants at the corner of K & N almost every Saturday, sometimes for the entire duration of the rally.
MacNab had better things to say about Rupp’s opponent, Cynthia Davis, the owner of a Christian book store owner and member of the Missouri House of Representatives since 2003:

What is it about stopping illegal immigration that draws such misguided indignation?

By working together, local and federal officers can better identify and remove criminal aliens — which is a tremendous benefit to public safety. — Immigration Customs and Enforcement
Last month, I met Arizona state Senator Russell Pearce, who drafted the state’s common-sense immigration enforcement law. He stressed that the nation needs immigration enforcement not just on the border, but in the interior as well. Over half the country’s illegal aliens entered through the Arizona border. Senator Pearce said he has listened to stories about families living on the border threatened by drug runners and gangs trespassing on their land. Some of these bold thugs even threatened to return and kill the families of anyone who calls the police. Earlier this year, an illegal alien murdered Arizona cattle rancher Robert Krentz on his property.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A House investigative committee on Thursday charged New York Rep. Charles Rangel with multiple ethics violations, dealing a serious blow to the former Ways and Means chairman and complicating Democrats’ election-year outlook.

The panel did not immediately specify the charges against the Democrat, who has served in the House for some 40 years and is fourth in seniority. The charges by a four-member panel of the House ethics committee sends the case to a House trial, where a separate eight-member panel of Republicans and Democrats will decide whether the violations can be proved by clear and convincing evidence.

June 26: President Obama and British Prime Minister Cameron talk at the conclusion of the G20 conference in Ontario, Canada.
At first glance, the similarities between President Obama and his new British counterpart, David Cameron, are unmistakable: Both leaders, who appeared together for the first time Tuesday at the White House, are young and charismatic and swept into office as reform candidates.
But that’s where the similarities end.
