Boehner: Vote to Adjourn Is a Vote to Raise Taxes
Appearing at the weekly Republican leadership press conference, Congressman John Boehner, R-Ohio, decried Democratic leaders’ intent to adjourn for the fall without allowing an up-or-down vote to stop all of the tax increases set to take effect on Jan. 1.
Boehner issued the following statement:
“A vote to adjourn this Congress without an up-or-down vote to stop all the tax hikes is a vote to raise taxes and destroy more jobs. American families and small businesses deserve better. This Congress has a chance to help end uncertainty for families and small businesses by stopping all the tax hikes set to take effect on January 1. If Democratic Leaders leave town without stopping all of the tax hikes, they are turning their backs on the American people.
“With the Pledge to America, Republicans are offering a specific plan to help create jobs, which includes stopping all the tax hikes. This is an agenda that could be voted on today if the speaker [of the House] will allow it.

AFL-CIO Head Tries to Meddle in NFL Labor Dispute; Update: NFL Says ‘No Thanks’

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The president of the AFL-CIO is ready to play mediator in the NFL’s labor dispute.
In a letter obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka offered to sit down with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith and determine the parameters for a new collective bargaining agreement.
“I would like to invite you both to meet with me to discuss how an agreement might be reached,” the letter reads. “I believe such a meeting would be an immediate and important step toward saving football for the 2011 season and avoiding the significant job losses that will occur if owners lock out the players and cancel games.”
The current CBA does not expire until March, and Smith contends league owners are preparing to lock out the players before the start of next season.
The two sides held their most recent bargaining session earlier this week in Washington.
Neither league officials nor players association representatives responded immediately to e-mailed requests for comment from the AP regarding Trumka’s letter, which went to NFL owners, mayors of NFL cities and governors of states that have NFL teams.
It’s not the first time the AFL-CIO, a labor union federation, has jumped into the NFL’s game.
Two weeks ago, Trumka sent a letter to all 32 team owners, warning that a lockout could cost thousands of Americans their jobs and cities more than $140 million in revenue.
Trumka made some familiar requests in the second letter, too.

Final Q2 GDP: 1.7%

Commerce released its final revision of the annualized rate of growth from the second quarter. Initially estimated at 2.4% in July, the number got sharply revised to 1.6% in August. Now, with the final numbers in place, economic growth still looks moribund:
Real gross domestic product — the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States — increased at an annual rate of 1.7 percent in the second quarter of 2010, (that is, from the first quarter to the second quarter), according to the “third” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 3.7 percent. …
The increase in real GDP in the second quarter primarily reflected positive contributions from personal consumption expenditures, nonresidential fixed investment, exports, private inventory investment, federal government spending, and residential fixed investment. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, increased.
The deceleration in real GDP in the second quarter primarily reflected a sharp acceleration in imports and a sharp deceleration in private inventory investment that were partly offset by an upturn in residential fixed investment, accelerations in nonresidential fixed investment and in federal government spending, and an upturn in state and local government spending.
The third quarter numbers for “Recovery Summer” will be out at the end of next month. That won’t look much better, thanks to a summer of almost across-the-board declines and a crash in home sales and construction. We will be lucky to get to 1.7%, unless September delivers some eye-popping upticks in sales and lowering of inventories, which have grown all summer long thanks to low demand.

Dan Webster: Alan Grayson’s dirtbaggery has really helped my campaign

I’m paraphrasing. As you’ll see, Webster is far too soft-spoken to call Teacups what he is, although the part about helping his campaign is dead on. Until this past weekend, I couldn’t have told you the name of Grayson’s GOP opponent. Now, thanks to his bottom-feeding, not only do I know who Webster is but he’s firmly in the “weep if we don’t take this seat” column on election night. Which, in an odd way, makes Grayson’s campaign ads of doom possibly the most effective of the cycle. It’s just that they’ve been effective in precisely the opposite way from how they were intended.

FBI Questioning Ex-SEIU President Andy Stern
FoxNews.com | AP
Published September 28, 2010
The FBI and U.S. Labor Department are looking into two deals involving Andy Stern — over a six-figure book contract given to the former head of the Service Employees International Union and payments to a labor leader convicted on separate fraud charges, a source familiar with the case told Fox News on Tuesday.
Alejandro Stephens, who was sentenced early this month to four months in prison and three months of home confinement for defrauding a non-profit organization in “bogus consulting agreements,” is former president of SEIU local 660 in Los Angeles.
Questioning of Stern, who is a member of President Obama’s debt commission, revolve around whether he paid Stephens $150,000 to do nothing as the local union boss. Stephens and Stern met with federal agents this summer to answer questions about the relationship.
An SEIU spokesman told Fox News that no labor official has been contacted in any way nor has received any inquiry of any kind from federal law enforcement officials regarding any investigation of Stern, who had signed off on Stephens’ contract.
But the spokesman noted that when several unions merged to form SEIU local 660 in 2007, Stephens was dropped as president. He was offered a $75,000 per year consulting job.
SEIU demanded that Stephens return all the money he had gotten up front from his contract, which has been in arbitration since August 2008. The spokesman said SEIU has cooperated with federal investigators in the probe of Stephens.
Stephens’ attorney, Roger Rosen, told The Associated Press that his client has not cooperated with federal officials and has no plans to do so in the future.
The disclosure about the federal inquiry of Stern comes just weeks ahead of contentious congressional elections in which the union is spending an estimated $44 million to support its favored Democratic candidates.
Stern left his post at SEIU in April, two years before the end of his term. The most frequent visitor to the White House in 2009, he is also a research fellow at Georgetown University and a paid consultant for the SEIU.
One person who spoke to federal agents twice, in May and June, told The Associated Press that they asked about a 2006 contract in which Stern received a $175,000 advance from Simon & Schuster to write the book “A Country That Works.” The SEIU and its locals bought thousands of copies of the book after it was published. The union also paid thousands to fact-check and promote the book, but Stern pocketed the advance.

Pelosi Knows the Tea Party Has Its ‘Most Effective Weapon’ Aimed At Her
BigGovernment.com
Glen Templeton \”God Bless Good Old Boys\”
Harvard Professor V.O. Key, Jr stated in his seminal work, “The Responsible Electorate”: “The most effective weapon of popular control in a democratic system is the capacity to throw a party from power.” That weapon is aimed at San Francisco liberal Nancy Pelosi and her cohorts who hijacked the peoples’ House.
There has been much said about the Tea Party blaming its views on right wing talk show hosts and political pundits. Many believe the Tea Party was formed by a Democratic Party and Administrations false conclusion that their success in the 2008 election was a vindication of their beliefs, the swing of the electorate response to the campaign positions taken, an indication of the intuitive mood of the people and, finally, as the respect it represents by an intelligent electorate.
Key concluded: “This narcissistic approach assumes it’s most repulsive form among election winners who have championed intolerance, who have stirred the passions and hatreds of people, or who have advocated causes known by decent men to be outrageous or dangerous in their long run circumstances.” The great Presidential scholar Richard Neustadt called it the pivotal nature of character to Presidential performance and James Barber of Duke University enhanced it with his classic book “Presidential Character”. They both concluded that it was character more than policy that determines Presidential performance.

New “credible” terror threat has CIA bombarding Pakistan jihadis with drone strikes; Update: Plot “severely disrupted”

At least 20 separate strikes in 28 days this month so far, an unprecedented pace. And it’s paid off: According to Bill Roggio, a missile attack a few days ago might have killed Al Qaeda’s new operational commander in Pakistan. Follow the first link to the Journal and you’ll find only a few bare details about the terror plot they’re trying to disrupt — the main target is Europe, the Haqqani network in Afghanistan might be involved, but very little beyond that. Luckily, ABC has been digging and has new info:
US and European officials said Tuesday they have detected a plot to carry out a major, coordinated series of new terror attacks in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and possibly the United States…
Intelligence and law enforcement authorities in the US and Europe said the threat information is based on the interrogation of a suspected German terrorist allegedly captured on his way to Europe in late summer and now being held at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.
US law enforcement officials say they have been told the terrorists were planning a series of “Mumbai-style” commando raids on what were termed “economic or soft” targets in the countries…
The captured German reportedly said several teams of attackers, all with European passports, had been trained and dispatched from training camps in Waziristan and Pakistan. Officials say the German claimed the attack plan had been approved by Osama Bin Laden.

Poll shows Obama re-elect number at 38%

A new poll from Politico has bad news for the White House as Barack Obama prepares for the grueling task of re-election. Despite a long history of American voters choosing to re-elect its Chief Executive, Obama only gets 38% of likely voters to agree that he deserves re-election, while 44% say they will definitely vote against him — and another 13% say they’re considering doing the same:
A significant majority of voters are considering voting against President Barack Obama in the 2012 election, expressing sour views of his new health care law and deep skepticism about his ability to create jobs and grow the sluggish economy, according to the latest POLITICO / George Washington University Battleground Poll.
Only 38 percent of respondents said Obama deserves to be reelected, even though a majority of voters hold a favorable view of him on a personal level. Forty-four percent said they will vote to oust him, and 13 percent said they will consider voting for someone else.
What’s the problem? ObamaCare and a lack of job creation have completely undermined Obama’s image as a moderate, pragmatic President:
It’s Obama’s policies that are hurting him right now. By a 13-point margin, voters are down on the health care law. In an especially troubling sign, more than half of self-identified independents — 54 percent — have an unfavorable opinion of the law, compared with just 38 percent who have a favorable opinion.
And by an 11-point margin, voters trust congressional Republicans to create jobs more than Obama. His approval rating stands at 46 percent, according to the poll of 1,000 likely voters, conducted Sept. 19 to Sept. 22.

In an otherwise serious poll from Politico and George Washington University, the survey also asks respondents which cable-news network they access most for political news. The results aren’t terribly surprising, as they more or less mirror the ratings, but are still noteworthy for one network’s almost-total marginalization. While Fox News Channel sailed to an impressive 42% and CNN got a substantial if unimpressive 30%, MSNBC got …
More people are getting their news about the upcoming election from cable television than any other source, and from Fox News more than any other cable channel, according to a POLITICO/George Washington University Battleground Poll released Monday.

Venezuela’s Election Lunacy: Results and Consequences
PajamasMedia.com

Christopher Hitchens observed a few weeks ago that el Presidente Chávez, whom he had visited in 2008 along with Chávez’s close friend Sean Penn and whose antics he still follows, is barking mad. As Hitchens put it:
Chávez … is very close to the climactic moment when he will announce that he is a poached egg and that he requires a very large piece of buttered toast so that he can lie down and take a soothing nap.
Unfortunately, a nap is not what Chávez has in mind:
In a televised broadcast from the Miraflores presidential palace, Chavez spoke out against opposition leaders: “They will never enter here again, the immoral ones, the mobsters, the stateless ones, the traitors. I am going to say this until the last day of my life.”
In Venezuela, where Chávez is by no means alone in his dementia and lunacy does not augur defeat, insanity is more useful as an excuse for whatever happens than as valid predictor of the future. Even trying to figure out what happened can induce insanity.

GOV2.0: Answer Obama Directly
BigGovernment.com

The challenge for the Tea Party movement is to identify specifically: What would you do?” the president said. “It’s not enough to say ‘get control of spending.’ I think it’s important for you to say, ‘I’m willing to cut veterans’ benefits,’ or ‘I’m willing to cut Medicare or Social Security or ‘I’m willing to see taxes go up.’
Ahem, can we please stop letting Obama get away with this false choice?
Can we please just start saying, “I’m willing to cut Public Employee Compensation (PCE) at the Federal, State, and Local level by 25%.”
Can we please just start saying, “Mr. President, HOW DARE YOU give us a false choice of new taxes and cuts in services?”

25% cuts in PCE are not draconian; they are common sense:
- We get rid of the least productive 10-25% in every department, like businesses do when times are tough.
- We increase the hours worked by Public Employees (by 10%) to match the private sector.
- We outsource responsibly to private sector companies that are chomping at the bit to replace fat bloated government.
With 25% cuts in PCE, the savings are close to $300B annually, and that’s AFTER we spend $100B letting private companies bid to replace the services currently provided by public employees.

Obama: We Can ‘Absorb’ Another 9/11
By: Dick Morris
President Barack Obama’s essentially European world outlook has no better illustration than his comment to Bob Woodward during a July, 2010 interview that “we can absorb a terrorist attack. We’ll do everything we can to prevent it, but even a 9/11, even the biggest attack ever…we absorbed it and we are stronger.”
The essence of the differences between the European and American view of terrorism is the deeply felt, but often unstated opinion on the Continent that terrorism is normal and that it would be a mistake to over-react to it. In the United States, terrorism cuts very, very deeply into our national psyche. But in Europe, it’s often just one of those things.
After all, Europe has seen a lot worse than the relatively naive American public has ever had to witness. The last serious bloodshed on American soil came in the Civil War. The Pearl Harbor and 9-11 attacks stand out as landmarks in our history precisely because we have shed so little American blood with the boundaries of the United States. Britain lost 50,000 people in the blitz during World War II. France lost about one-quarter of its military age men in World War I. Germany saw seven million die in World War II (not counting the German Jews the Nazis killed). Next to these horrific casualties, 2400 dead at Pearl Harbor and 3,000 lost on 9-11 pale by comparison.
Basically, Europeans say to America “get over it. Grow up. Welcome to reality.” But Americans refuse to accept the idea that random death and massive violence are inevitable concomitants of the modern world. We demand that government emphatically reject this as a norm and move heaven and earth to stop it from happening.

60 Minutes on Feisal Rauf’s Ground Zero Mega Mosque. But Who is Going to Save us from Imam Rauf?
Atlas Shrugs
Sunday, September 26, 2010
Imam Rauf, the self-described “head coach” of the global strategic initiative — audio here (his “players” include “the President of the United States, or the President of Malaysia, or the President of England” [sic]) said the following in tonight’s 60 minutes episode.
“It’s my duty as an American Muslim to stand between you, the American non-Muslim and the radicals trying to attack you.”
More threats from this snake. He is going to save us ….. from jihadists? Who is going to save us from him?
And what is this American Muslim nonsense? He’s an American, is he not? So he should stand with America. Period. But he is essentially as fundamentalist as those he claims only he can protect us from. His motive to build a mega mosque on Ground Zero was made painfully clear in this quote in the NY Times back in December 2009 announcing the Ground Zero mosque, and subsequently scrubbed from the article.
“New York is the capital of the world, and this location close to 9/11 is iconic,” Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf
A presence so close to the World Trade Center, “where a piece of the wreckage fell,” Imam Feisal added, “sends the opposite statement to what happened on 9/11.”
How’s that?
Joan Brown Campbell, director of the department of religion at the Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York and former general secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ U.S.A., who is a supporter of Imam Feisal, acknowledged the possibility of a backlash from those opposed to a Muslim presence at ground zero.
But, she added: “Building so close is owning the tragedy.”
His first performance on 60 minutes was equally memorable. It was right after 911, and Rauf blamed America for the 911 attacks. “Osama Bin Laden is made in the USA.” Watch that video here.
So tune in tonight at 7 Eastern time. I was interviewed by Scott Pelly of 60 minutes as well, for well over an hour and a half. It was a hostile interview. So I am not sure what will and will not run.

Chavez’s Socialist Party Loses Supermajority in Venezuelen Elections

FoxNews.com | WSJ
CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez suffered a political blow in congressional elections, losing the ability to pass new laws at will after opposition candidates banded together behind a unified plank of candidates.
Mr. Chávez still enjoys a congressional majority after candidates loyal to him won at least 96 of the 165 seats. But opposition candidates won at least 61 seats, enough to strip Mr. Chávez of his two-thirds majority-the threshold needed to pass sweeping legislation in the congress.
No official vote tally has been released. But the opposition says it also won 52% of the popular vote which, if verified, would provide momentum going into the 2012 presidential elections. “We are the majority,” said Ramón Guillermo Aveledo, an opposition director.
Aristóbulo Istúriz, campaign chief for the socialist PSUV party, also declared the results a victory. “We went for two-thirds and weren’t able to reach it,” he said. “But we’re the majority.” There was little joy at the Socialist party headquarters, which shut its doors as the vote count dragged on into the early hours of the morning.
“A new cycle begins today,” said Carlos Ocariz, the opposition mayor of Petare, a sprawling mostly slum district that was once a Chávez stronghold, but which elected an opposition deputy on Sunday. “Chávez’s rollercoaster is going down.”
The election is widely seen as a referendum on the president’s 11-year rule. Before the election, the populist leader had predicted his United Socialist Party of Venezuela or PSUV would win a two-thirds majority. Mr. Chávez, 56 years old, named the electoral campaign “Operation Demolition” and had told his followers to “demolish” the political opposition.
“This will change the political dynamics of Venezuela,” said Michael Shifter, president of the Washington-based think tank, the Inter-American Dialogue. “It’s a respectable result which the opposition can build on for the 2012 presidential race. It shows they are back in the game and Chávez is vulnerable.”

Democrat Jerry Brown has moved into a narrow lead over Republican Meg Whitman in their fractious contest for California governor, while his party colleague Barbara Boxer has opened a wider margin over GOP nominee Carly Fiorina in the race for U.S. Senate, a new Los Angeles Times/USC poll has found.
The Democratic candidates were benefiting from their party’s dominance in California and the continued popularity here of President Obama, who has retained most of his strength in the state even as he has weakened in other parts of the country. Support for Obama may play a key role in the Senate contest, one of a handful nationally that could determine which party wins control of the chamber.

The Black Panther Distraction – While Colbert Clowns It Up In Congress The MSM Ignores Black Panther Hearings

Could this “show” have been a distraction for the American People?
Stephen Colbert appearing at the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law has done its job. They wanted to distract everyone from the bombshells coming out of the Black Panther hearings when Christopher Coates testified, and it sure did. Glenn Reynolds:
Front page of Daily Caller: Colbert. Drudge led with Colbert until the news of the Klein & Zucker firings came out. Limbaugh led off today talking about Colbert. NRO has covered Colbert at The Corner, but not Coates. Washington Examiner headline: Colbert. Looking around other sites, I see more about Colbert than Coates.
What is the MSM ignoring? Only the fact that Coates, taking whistleblower protection, testified why the case against the Black Panthers was dismissed: (PDF of testimony here)
…the result of their deep-seated opposition to the equal enforcement of the VRA [Voter Rights Act] against racial minorities and for the protection of whites who have been discriminated against.
How wide was the opposition to the equal enforcement of the law in the Black Panther case?

Why Doesn’t Obama Worry About Union Political Spending?

Media reports have been decrying the corporate influence in the 2010 election cycle. If you were to read the Washington Post, New York Times, or most online media sources you would think Citizens United v. FEC is the biggest problem facing America.

That’s a narrative that President Obama has embraced. Since the Supreme Court decided Citizens United in January, President Obama has led a vocal campaign against the decision and the First Amendment rights that it protected. He has devoted at least three weekly radio addresses to the topic, one Rose Garden speech, and even made an unprecedented attack against the Supreme Court during his State of the Union address.
Recently, in addressing liberal donors, President Obama proclaimed:
“That’s the biggest problem that we have all across the country right now. We’ve got great candidates who are taking their case directly to the American people, but they are being drowned out by groups like Americans for Prosperity. Nobody knows who they are. Well, we know who they are — but nobody knows where the money is coming from, and they certainly don’t appear on those ads.
So I believe that if we are able to get our message out, if we have the same energy and focus and determination that we had in 2008 and 2006, then we will do fine. But that requires us to understand the stakes involved in this election. And I want everybody to understand, especially those who supported me, we are just in the first quarter here. We’ve gotten a lot of stuff done, but we’ve got a lot more work to do.”
The real problem is that he’s only telling half the story. Yes, corporations are financing issue advertisements, as they were allowed to before Citizens United. But they are not the only ones exercising their rights to political speech.

Campaign trying to crack down on ‘dead’ voters, other fraud

Noah Webster once described what he apparently considered the ideal result, when voters in the United States remember “that God commands you to choose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God.”
But in just the last few months there have been scandals over fake voters reportedly “registered” by ACORN activists and states being reluctant to send their ballots to overseas military personnel in time for them to vote and return them.
Further, testimony from J. Christian Adams and Chris Coates, both former insiders in the U.S. Justice Department, suggests there are major problems within the federal government because of an attitude against enforcing voter rights laws equally.

Now alarms are being raised over the unwillingness of some states to purge their voter registration lists adequately, leaving the names of the deceased on the rolls and opening the door for voter fraud.

Social Networking’s Big Fat Failed Week
FoxNews.com
Published September 24, 2010

A familiar site for many Twitter users: the site’s so called “Fail Whale,” posted when there is a service disruption or the site is over capacity.
Facebook and Twitter residents were thrown back into the dark ages before social networking this week, when hackers and server flaws made several popular sites unavailable.
A glitch on Facebook broke “Like” buttons across the Internet, meaning people couldn’t brag about their latest harvest in Farmville, share their love for obscure bands, or say happy birthday to distant acquaintances. The service disruption came on the heels of a virus that swept through Twitter earlier this week, making the site temporarily a very hazardous place to visit.

Our Government at Work? Stephen Colbert Storms Capitol Hill
E!Online UK
Today 9:40 AM PDT by Josh Grossberg
Stephen Colbert is making the Colbert Nation proud. But as for the people running the nation, we’re not so sure.
In a surreal spectacle, Comedy Central’s faux conservative pundit testified—in character—before a House subcommittee on behalf of migrant laborers.
And yes, Colbert was being Colbert.
“I certainly hope that my star power can bump this hearing all the way up to C-SPAN 1,” Colbert told members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees, and Border Security and the packed gallery.
But it almost didn’t happen. House subcommittee cochairman, Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) kicked things off by trying to halt Colbert’s testimony before it could begin: “You run your show, we run the committee.”
But after an objection by fellow chair, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), who invited the comedian, Conyers backed down and the hearing got underway.

Obama calls ‘hateful’ Iranian leader’s suggestion of U.S.-Zionist plot behind Sept. 11
By Mark S. Smith (CP)
NEW YORK, N.Y. — President Barack Obama on Friday condemned as “offensive” and “hateful” the suggestion of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the Sept. 11 attacks might have been orchestrated by the U.S. government.
The president’s remarks in an interview with BBC Persian Television came a day after the Iranian leader included the incendiary comment in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly. It prompted a walkout by the U.S. delegation and others.
“For him to make a statement like that was inexcusable,” Obama told BBC Persian Television in an interview at his New York hotel. “It was offensive. It was hateful. And particularly for him to make the statement here in Manhattan, just a little north of ground zero, where families lost their loved ones, people of all faiths, all ethnicities who see this as the seminal tragedy of this generation.”
In his Thursday speech, Ahmadinejad suggested it’s worth investigating allegations that “some segments within the U.S. government” orchestrated the attacks in a bid to aid Israel.
U.S. officials immediately denounced the remarks as “abhorrent” and accused Ahmadinejad of trafficking in conspiracy theories.
In Obama’s U.N. address earlier Thursday, he reiterated calls for Iran to end its nuclear defiance and prove to the world its uranium enrichment program is purely peaceful. But he also said the door remains open to talks that could end Iran’s sanctions and isolation.

Poll: Majority Oppose Net Neutrality Adoption

A new survey released Thursday revealed a majority of Americans oppose the Federal Communications Commissions proposed overhaul of the nation’s broadband regulatory regime.

The poll, conducted by Hart Research Associates, found that a full 75% of Americans nationwide believe the internet is “working well.” The survey also found that 55% of respondents believe that the government should have no hand in regulating the internet.
But for senior FCC brass, the heartburn does not end there: The poll of 800 likely voters found that a plurality of respondents conceded having voted for President Barack Obama in 2008, signaling to Mr. Obama’s White House that it may yet be losing Independent voters on another regulatory issue.
