Tina Korbe of The Heritage Foundation, my employer, interviewed House Freshman on spending cuts. Korbe interviewed Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA), Renee Ellmers (R-NC), Allen West (R-FL), Chip Cravaack (R-MN), Steve Southerland (R-FL) and James Lankford (R-OK). West declares in the video that ”it takes 5 miles to turn an aircraft carrier and if we don’t start now, we will never get this ship, the U.S.S. America, righted so that we can launch into a new future.” Agreed.
The time to start cutting is this week on the Continuing Resolution (CR) while the House has an opportunity to send a bill to the Senate with at least $100 billion in cuts. Today is a big day in the House and we shall see how debate proceeds on the hundreds of amendments to the CR.
Korbe writes over at The Foundry that a hundred billion is a great start.
Lawmakers are considering cuts upwards of $100 billion in cuts — and that’s just to start. The House will vote on hundreds of amendments, and floor debate will last until late in the night. The conservative Republican Study Committee, for example, will offer an additional $20 billion in cuts on top of what’s already proposed.
Kentucky Freshman Senator Rand Paul wants to cut $500 billion this year from the budget. This new appetite for spending cuts should be welcome news to conservatives and supporters of the Tea Party.
