A New York judge remanded IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn in custody Monday on charges he sexually assaulted a hotel maid.
Strauss-Kahn is due to reappear in court on May 20.
Prosecutors has said they were concerned that Strauss-Kahn might flee to France if released.
Defense lawyers said Strauss-Kahn denied the charges against him.
Strauss-Kahn was pulled off a Paris-bound plane Saturday and charged with a criminal sexual act, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment Sunday in a scandal that appeared to wreck his hopes of running for president of France.
