COLUMBIA, S.C. –  The federal government filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to stop implementation of South Carolina’s tough new immigration law, arguing that the legislation that requires law officers to check suspects’ immigration status is unconstitutional.

Federal officials and state officials had met to discuss the issue a week ago.

The government wants a judge to stop enforcement of the legislation, which requires that officers call federal immigration officials if they suspect someone is in the country illegally following a stop for something else, U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles told The Associated Press.

Top 10 Reasons Occupy Wall Street Is a Joke

Human Events   [HUMAN EVENTS.com]

by  Human Events
October 29 2011

The Left was envious when Tea Party protests popped up in 2009, and now has countered with the Occupy Wall Street gathering in New York that has spread to other cities.  While Tea Party enthusiasm became an effective force during the 2010 elections, #OWS will not have the same impact and here is why:  The Top 10 Reasons Occupy Wall Street is a Joke.

1.  Agenda:  Unlike the clarity of the Tea Party message of smaller government, the Wall Street Occupiers have a potpourri of juvenile demands, from free college education and an annual living wage to “forgiveness of debt on the entire planet.”  One protester mused that the solution was to do away with money altogether.  Apparently these recipients of federal student loans have yet to take Economics 101.

2.  Celebrities: The usual suspects of empty-headed progressive Hollywood stars are showing up at the Wall Street rally, many arriving by limo.  Millionaires Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Michael Moore and Roseanne Barr have all made appearances.  Kanye West wore gold jewelry worth more than many protesters have made in their lifetimes. If they hadn’t noticed, these stars are part of the 1%.

3.  Soros:  The roster of George Soros-funded entities are aiding and abetting the Occupy movement.  AdBusters, an anti-consumerist publication that sounded the initial call for the protests, is funded in part by Tides, a major recipient of Soros’ funding.  Another Soros venture—MoveOn.org—has rallied support for the initiative.  Soros, a billionaire several times over largely through currency manipulation, says he “sympathizes with their grievances” of those protesting corporate greed.

KABUL, Afghanistan –  NATO says the 13 people killed when a suicide bomber rammed a military convoy in Kabul included five coalition troops and eight civilian contractors.

NATO initially reported that all 13 killed were service members. But after further identification, it confirmed that eight were civilians working for the coalition.

A U.S. official says all were Americans, but Canadian defense spokesperson Lt. Col. Christian Lemay told The Associated Press that a Canadian soldier was among the troopers killed. Canadian military officials have not yet released the soldier’s identity or further details.

President Two-Face

UPI
U.S. President Barack Obama announces the last U.S. troops will leave Iraq by the end of this year.

I’ve seen the Democrats’ latest attempts to recast President Barack Obama as some kind of latter-day Alexander the Great. I’ve observed from Outside The Asylum as the same liberals who castigated President George W. Bush, President George H.W. Bush and President Ronald Reagan (but not President Bill Clinton) for their warlike ways have suddenly tried to recast themselves as latter-day Gen. George Pattons.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) announced Monday a program that will allow homeowners who are “underwater” — owing more on their homes than they are worth — to refinance at today’s low interest rates.

The Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) will apply to borrowers of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and FHFA estimates that up to 1 million borrowers will use the program, according to The Washington Post.

AFL-CIO Chief Trumka Calls Mass-Arrests at Occupy Wall Street: ‘Tremendous Dishonor to America’

[TheBlaze.com]

Remember when the AFL-CIO pledged lawyers and other resources to the Occupy protesters? Well, with the mass-arrests sweeping the movement, the occupiers might soon look to collect on that promise. Fortunately for them, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka still seems to be on board, calling the arrests of Occupy Wall Street agitators a “tremendous dishonor to America.”

Trumka then called on elected officials to enable protesters to continue to exercise “their most American of rights.”

Between Occupy Oakland riots on Wednesday and Occupy Atlanta clashes, more than 150 demonstrators  have been arrested thus far.

“The Occupy Wall Street movement has elevated the national conversation by shining overdue attention on the struggles of the 99% for whom the economy is broken,” Trumka said in a statement published on TRN. “When people can’t raise their voices around pervasive inequality, there is a fundamental problem with how we’re functioning as a nation.”

Perry’s Flat Tax Proposal Puts Him Back in the Saddle Again

Around lunchtime on Tuesday I sat down in front of my computer, opened foxews.com, and immediately texted my brother: “Gov. Perry is back!” I did this because the largest portion of the Fox News homepage was taken up by a photo of a confident looking Gov. Perry telling Americans about his economic plan – “Cut, Balance, and Grow” – and it was obvious he was swinging at pitches that were in his wheelhouse.

In such a setting, and on such a topic, Gov. Perry exudes the kind of confidence that took him to the top of the polls in August.

Far less complicated than McRomney’s “59 point” plan, Perry’s plan can be easily summed up thus:

  • Introduce a 20 percent flat rate on individual and corporate income, down from the current top rate of 35 percent.
  • Provide an exemption of $12,500 per person, so that a family of four would face no tax on its first $50,000 in income.
  • Preserve deductions for mortgage interest, charitable donations, and state and local taxes on incomes below $500,000.
  • Allow anyone to file under the current system if they choose.
  • Shift to a territorial system of corporate taxation, allowing corporations to repatriate profits still parked overseas at a 5.25 percent rate.

Business Elizabeth Warren Takes Credit for ‘Intellectual Foundation’ of Occupy Wall Street

[TheBlaze.com]

Massachusetts Senate candidate, activist, and former Obama adviser Elizabeth Warren is now taking credit for the Occupy Wall Street movement, according to The Daily Beast.

“I created much of the intellectual foundation for what they do,” she said in an interview with The Daily Beast. “I support what they do.”

Daily Beast writer Samuel P. Jacobs explains: “Warren’s boast isn’t bluster: As a professor of commercial law at Harvard and the force behind Obama’s consumer-protection bureau, Warren has been one of the most articulate voices challenging the excesses of Wall Street.”

Most Blaze readers are probably familiar with Warren as the Harvard professor who famously claimed that “there is nobody in this country who got rich on his own.”

She has been described as “a guileless, fevered Marxist” by former Reagan White House political director Jeffrey Lord, and George Will once wrote that she, “clarifies the liberal project and the stakes of contemporary politics. The project is to dilute the concept of individualism.”

Perry: You know what’s a lot of fun? Birth certificates!

[HotAir.com]

posted at 12:10 pm on October 25, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

When I mentioned Rick Perry’s foray into Birtherism yesterday, a number of his supporters commented, e-mail, and tweeted that I was being unfair to the Republican candidate, and that he wasn’t endorsing or engaging in Birtherism at all in his Parade interview.  Today’s interview with CNBC’s John Harwood will be a little harder to explain away:

Q: Why did you choose to keep the birther issue alive?

A: It’s a good issue to keep alive. You know, Donald [Trump] has got to have some fun. It’s fun to poke him a little bit and say “Hey, let’s see your grades and your birth certificate.” I don’t have a clue about where the president — and what this birth certificate says. But it’s also a great distraction. I’m not distracted by it.

Barack Obama’s college grades are certainly fair game, especially after the media went after Perry’s less-than-stellar academic record at Texas A&M. Obama has refused to release his college transcripts, and the media has exhibited a lot less curiosity about Obama’s scholastic record than about those of his rivals in either election cycle.  In fact, they were a lot less interested in vetting Obama on anything in 2008 than they were with John McCain and especially with Sarah Palin.  Media outlets sent dozens of reporters to Wasilla and Juneau, while mainly ignoring Chicago reporters who tried to explain that Obama was a Daley Machine dilettante.

Judge Napolitano: Obama ‘Shredding the Constitution’

[Newsmax.com]

President Barack Obama is shredding the U.S. Constitution faster than any of the 42 men who preceded him in office, according to Fox News judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano, author of the brand new “It is Dangerous to be Right when the Government is Wrong.”It is so bad he should be impeached over the murder of American terror suspect Anwar al-Awlaki – and if Congress won’t take that action, he should be indicted once he is out of office. In an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV, Napolitano said it doesn’t matter that Awlaki was probably guilty – the fact is he was a U.S. citizen and the Constitution outlaws his killing without due process.

From The New York Post:

Even in Zuccotti Park, greed is good.

Occupy Wall Street’s Finance Committee has nearly $500,000 in the bank, and donations continue to pour in — but its reluctance to share the wealth with other protestErs is fraying tempers.

Some drummers — incensed they got no money to replace or safeguard their drums after a midnight vandal destroyed their instruments Wednesday — are threatening to splinter off.

“F–k Finance. I hope Mayor Bloomberg gets an injunction and demands to see the movement’s books. We need to know how much money we really have and where it’s going,” said a frustrated Bryan Smith, 45, who joined OWS in Lower Manhattan nearly three weeks ago from Los Angeles, where he works in TV production.

Republican presidential candidate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry delivers a keynote address during the Western Republican Leadership Conference, Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, in Las Vegas.

Seeking to reinvigorate his Republican presidential campaign, Texas Gov. Rick Perry will unveil next week his plan to simplify the federal tax code with a flat income tax rate – a proposal that has energized conservatives in the past but failed to gain mainstream support.

Perry, who entered the presidential race to great fanfare in August but stumbled in his first few debates, is hoping his plan will help recapture the early momentum of his campaign much in the same way that Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan helped vault him to the front of the GOP field. But Cain’s plan has come under intense scrutiny and criticism ever since, forcing the former pizza company executive to redefine the plan to make it fairer for the poor.Republican presidential candidate, Texas Gov. From the Associated Press:

Protesters who have camped outside St. Paul’s Cathedral in central London for six days have forced the venerable cathedral to close to visitors for the first time since World War II, church officials said Friday.

The Dean of St. Paul’s, Rev. Graeme Knowles, said the decision to shut the doors of the iconic London church to visitors and tourists following the afternoon service was made with “heavy hearts” because of health and safety concerns.

U.S. Drone Involved in Final Qaddafi Strike, as Obama Heralds Regime’s ‘End’

AP – Oct. 20, 2011: Libyans celebrate Muammar Qaddafi’s death in Tripoli, Libya.

A U.S. Predator drone was involved in the airstrike on Muammar Qaddafi’s convoy Thursday in the moments before his death, a U.S. defense official told Fox News.

The official said the drone, along with a French fighter jet, fired on the “large convoy” leaving Qaddafi’s hometown of Sirte. A French defense official earlier said about 80 vehicles were in the convoy — the official said the strike did not destroy the convoy but that fighters on the ground afterward intercepted the vehicle carrying Qaddafi. He was later killed.

House GOP Reignites Abortion Issue Talks

After a respite from fights over the Federal funding of abortion, House Republicans are moving to revisit the battle through a bill aimed at removing the ties between the government and abortion providers, The Washington Times reported.

The newspaper reported that the proposal would amend the Affordable Care Act to prevent Federally subsidized insurance plans from paying for abortion services.

“The Protect Life Act is a crucial measure that not only returns to the status quo on federal funding for abortion, it also protects health care entities from discrimination that is already occurring under health reform,” Joseph R. Pitts (R-Pa.) said in a hearing.

The debate over funding for abortion came several weeks after Representative Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) demanded that Planned Parenthood Federation of American turn over more than 10 years of documents as part of an investigation by the Energy and Commerce subcommittee, according to POLITICO.

Another part of the bill proposed that insurers and providers would not be required to participate in abortion-related services for their customers, or provide coverage for certain types of birth control, the Times reported.

Large Solar Flares Among Threats To Power Grid

NASA.GOV
On Sept. 22, a large solar flare occurred, as well as several smaller flares and a significant coronal mass ejection.

Two major threats have the ability to partially or completely destroy the power grid: electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) and coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

You might remember Saddam Hussein threatening to use chemical weapons against both the United States and Israel during the first and second Gulf wars.

You might also remember that we responded to the threat by promising to “respond with overwhelming force and extract a very high price should he be foolish enough to use chemical weapons on United States forces.”

Many people thought that this meant dropping a nuke on Iraq. While that was definitely a possibility, it’s much more likely that our response would have been for us to use an EMP caused by detonating a nuclear bomb 100 miles to 300 miles above the Earth’s surface.

CNN Poll: 59% Believe Obama’s Policies Will Fail

It’s hard to know what to make of this release from the latest CNN poll.  Barack Obama continues to run underwater on overall job approval in the CNN poll, improving slightly since early September’s 43/55 to 46/50 today.  However, American confidence in his policies hit a new low — well below his approval rating:

CNN/ORC International Poll released Monday indicates that 46% of the public approves of the job the president is doing in the White House, basically unchanged from September, with 50% saying they disapprove of how he is handling his duties. …

According to the survey, 36% say they think the president’s policies will succeed, with 59% saying Obama’s policies will fail, up 12 points from last year and nearly double the 32% who said in 2009 that the president’s policies will fail. Most Democrats and independent voters say they hope Obama’s policies will succeed. But a majority of Republicans say they hope Obama’s policies will fail.

Liberal Authors Claim GOP Presidential Field Showcases ‘Evangelical Anti-Intellectualism’

[TheBlaze.com]

Is the GOP presidential field “a showcase of evangelical anti-intellectualism?” That’s what Karl W. Giberson and Randall J. Stephens claim in a New York Times op-ed. How so, you ask?

Well, Giberson and Stephens, who both have a history in academia at Eastern Nazarene College and who came together to author the book, “The Anointed: Evangelical Truth in a Secular Age,” believe that the current Republican candidates hold views that defy logic. A description of their book sheds more light on their mentality:

“Exploring intellectual authority within evangelicalism, the authors reveal how America’s populist ideals, anti-intellectualism, and religious free market, along with the concept of anointing—being chosen by God to speak for him like the biblical prophets—established a conservative evangelical leadership isolated from the world of secular arts and sciences.”

“Why are our leaders turning a blind eye to anti-Semitic, anti-Israel attacks?” it asks:

You can read about the anti-Semitism at the protests here, here, here, and here.
