Stockton [CA] could become biggest city to go bankrupt

[News.Yahoo.com]

February 29, 2012
STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) — City leaders seeking a way to dig out from under massive debts have taken a step toward making Stockton the nation’s largest city to file for bankruptcy.

However, thanks to a new California law, the City Council’s move also could be the first step toward avoiding such a dramatic move.

Under the state law, municipalities considering bankruptcy must first seek mediation with creditors, with the goal of settling debts without filing for Chapter 9 protection.

Dozens of residents attended Tuesday’s six-hour council meeting to oppose the vote to enter mediation, saying they feared it would push Stockton further into trouble. The river port city of 290,000 already has the second-highest foreclosure rate in the nation and one of the highest crime and unemployment rates.

“If they vote for mediation, it is the first step towards bankruptcy,” former City Manager Dwane Milnes told KCRA-TV. “That means 1,000 people could lose retirement benefits.”

Stockton will be the first city to test the state law, Assembly Bill 506, which is less than two months old. It requires local government agencies to undergo mediation or hold a public hearing and declare a fiscal emergency before filing for bankruptcy.

In 2008, Vallejo became the biggest California city to file for bankruptcy, and it emerged from bankruptcy last year.

Romney on Republicans: ‘It’s Very Easy to Excite the Base With Incendiary Comments’

(CNSNews.com) – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, said on Tuesday that the base of his party is easily excited by “outrageous” rhetoric.

“It’s very easy to excite the base with incendiary comments,” Romney  told reporters.

“We’ve seen throughout the campaign that if you’re willing to say really outrageous things that are accusative and attacking of President Obama, that you’re going to jump up in the polls,” Romney said.

Creating chaos within the Democratic ranks

Democrats in Lansing, Mich., are nowhere near the far end of the liberal-o-meter as are Democrats in San Francisco, Calif.

So while Rick Santorum is taking heat for encouraging Democrats in Michigan to vote for him in Tuesday’s primary, he is actually using a playbook that the GOP should adopt in the general election.

And that is:  Pit “working class” Democrats against the extreme radicals who populate the activist wing of the Democratic Party.

Rank-and-file union members, for instance, are just as disgusted with President Obama’s decision to punt on the Keystone pipeline as are conservative Republicans around the country.

“Instead of celebrating their victory by hugging a tree, they should hug a jobless construction worker because they’re the ones who are going to need it,” fumed the Laborers’ International Union of North America.

“Once again the President has sided with environmentalists instead of blue-collar construction workers, even though environmental concerns were more than adequately addressed,” they added.

Suspected gunman in Ohio school shooting to remain in custody, judge rules

The left image, provided by family, shows Daniel Parmertor, who died Monday following a shooting rampage at Chardon High School in Ohio. Russell King Jr., right, shown in a yearbook photo, was declared dead on Tuesday, authorities said.

The suspect in a shooting rampage at an Ohio high school that killed three and wounded two others will remain in detention, a judge ruled at a hearing Tuesday.

The court identified the suspect as T.J. Lane, and said that prosecutors have until March 1, 2012 to formally charge him.

He will be detained for 15 days, Judge Timothy Grendell ruled.

Authorities had not yet identified Lane citing legal reasons, but plan to do so in a press conference later Tuesday.

A lawyer for the suspect’s family had earlier identified him to a Cleveland television station as a 17-year-old junior at the high school who has been described by fellow classmates as an outcast.

What’s At Stake in Michigan?

In A Brokered Convention, Who Will Control The Brokers?

Posted by Dan McLaughlin (Diary)

Monday, February 27th at 2:17 PM EST

Here’s why tomorrow’s Michigan primary is so important: it’s about establishment confidence in Mitt Romney and the last outside chance of getting another entrant in the race.

There are, as I’ve noted previously, a number of different types of “establishment” vs “grassroots” divides in the GOP, but you don’t have to have any particular definition of ‘establishment’ to recognize that Romney’s candidacy leans heavily on the support he draws from traditional ‘establishment’ or ‘insider’ sources: money from big-dollar fundraisers, endorsements from big-name elected officials, and covering fire from right-leaning journalists at major mainstream publications and conservative journals. Romney has depended, time and again, on his ability to get out of trouble by having the resources to go more negative than whatever opponent he’s targeting: more money to dump on negative ads and a bigger chorus of voices amplifying those attacks.

Aside from Mormon support – which is somewhat sui generis to Romney – some of Romney’s structural support comes from people who know him personally or identify with him as a fellow wealthy businessman; some comes from people who fear running a bold-colors conservative; and some comes from those who, whether or not they’d support a conservative in theory, fear Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich as electoral liabilities, Santorum for his overly outspoken social conservatism, Newt for his long train of baggage. (It’s obviously Santorum represents a serious threat to Romney at present.)

Two weeks ago, Fox News reported that President Obama held statistically significant leads over his possible Republican opponents in a series of swing state polls.  Today, hope and change:

In the poll, Obama lags the two leading Republican rivals in the 12 states likely to determine the outcome of a close race in November:

•Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum tops Obama 50%-45% in the swing states. Nationwide, Santorum’s lead narrows to 49%-46%.

•Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney edges Obama 48%-46% in the swing states. Nationwide, they are tied at 47% each.

The battleground states surveyed include Michigan — where Tuesday’s primary has become a critical showdown between Romney and Santorum — as well as Ohio and Virginia, which vote next week on Super Tuesday. The other swing states are Colorado, Iowa, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Is Google Targeting Rick Santorum?

Type the word “Santorum” in Google and you won’t find his campaign website or other positive, useful information about him in the first, second or even third entries. In fact, almost every entry on the all-important first page of “Santorum” results — the one most users see — is laden with nasty, sometimes vulgar attacks. The very first entry for his name offers a “definition” that reads “Santorum [1.] The frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex. [ 2.]Senator Rick Santorum.”The definition is repeated in another entry in the popular website Urban Dictionary, which is a compendium of street and often-vulger slang terms.Other first page Google entries include those with headings such as “Santorum Exposed,” “Despicable: Rick Santorum’s Wife Uses Her Sick Child To Lie About …,” and “Rick Santorum’s Anal Sex Problem.”Buried amid the smut is entry number 7, which offers a link to Santorum’s official campaign website. Is Google at war with Rick Santorum?

Nation might reach $16.4 trillion debt limit close to Election Day

[TheHill.com]

By Peter Schroeder – 02/23/12 02:46 PM ET

The $16.4 trillion debt ceiling could be reached just weeks after Election Day, according to a new report.

The analysis raises the possibility that lawmakers might have to raise the nation’s borrowing limit before the election, a scenario they took pains to avoid in the debt deal passed in August.

Now, partially due to lower than expected tax receipts, the nation could reach the $16.4 trillion debt limit as early as late November, according to an analysis from the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) to be released Friday.

Just a few weeks ago, the Center has estimated the debt-limit wouldn’t be reached until the spring of 2013.

But continued sluggishness in the economy, coupled with the recent payroll package that adds to the deficit, is casting doubt on that timeframe, raising the possibility of a bitter fight over deficit spending at the height of a presidential election year.

Last year’s fight over the debt ceiling brought the nation to the brink of default and resulted in the first-ever downgrade of U.S. securities. The last-minute deal to raise the borrowing limit by $2.1 trillion was supposed to tide the government over until the end of 2012, by which point electoral politics would be in the rearview mirror.

But analysts at the BPC said it’s looking increasingly likely that those best-laid plans will be dashed by “unexpected circumstances.”

‘Born Alive’ and ‘Partial Birth Abortion’ Barry [Barack] Beckons!

[Editor:  This story is from an archive by Conservative Viewpoint (GDMP.net), our original website name.  It was posted directly from: http://www.floppingaces.netToday, Rush Limbaugh brought up a Politico posting in which Newt Gingrich was misquoted as bringing up the issue of "partial birth abortion" when, in fact, Newt had brought up an issue for which Barack Obama supported when he was Illinois State senator.  The issue that the Speaker brought up was 'infanticide' which has been deemed by some as post birth baby killing by a physician when a baby is born alive after a botched abortion.]

[INFANTICIDE] Caution: The graphic herein may be disturbing to some; Obama supports this!

Vote for McCain-Palin, Nov 4th!We are being told that the Obama campaign plans to make a play for the Catholic vote. His margins among them are plummeting. An article by John M. Broder in the New York Times grapples anxiously with the problem. What can Obama do now? Maybe, as a [token] act of atonement, they can allow the younger Robert Casey to address the convention? (For those who don’t remember, Robert Casey Sr., governor of Pennsylvania was NOT allowed to address the convention, because he was pro-life. A lot of Catholics have not forgotten.)

The article even dares to broach the reason for the precipitous drop. In my mind, that can hardly be a question. Barack Obama has the most radical pro-abortion position in Presidential election history and the word is getting out.

How radical is it? Well for one thing, He opposed a ban on the killing of fetuses born alive during abortion in Illinois. Yes, you read that right. (This was started by the experience of a traumatized abortion nurse who was not even allowed to hold a surviving child, but instructed to put ‘it’ in the trash.) From Broder’s article, this was his rationale:

Mr. Obama has said he had opposed the bill because it was poorly drafted and would have threatened the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade that established abortion as a constitutional right. He said he would have voted for a similar bill that passed the United States Senate because it did not have the same constitutional flaw as the Illinois bill.

Palin: press ‘wee-weed up’ over Santorum Satan speech

[FrontPorchPolitics.com]

Written on February 23, 2012 at 7:32 am by

Sarah Palin has criticized the ‘lame-stream media’ for making too much of Rick Santorum’s 2008 statement that Satan is attacking America. But the media aren’t the only ones concerned.

Sarah Palin says the lame-stream media are getting all “wee-weed up” about Rick Santorum’s Satan speech. By that, we believe she means the mainstream press is making too much of it. Is she right?

Well, we’ll note here that the media gets wee-weed up about many subjects, because if they don’t, it can be very hard to stay awake during a slow news day. Mr. Santorum’s remarks were made four years ago, in a different context than a presidential race, and are easy to misinterpret if you have a dissimilar religious background.

Obamacare Mandate says Pregnancy is a Disease [Reader Post]

[FloppingAces.net]

By:
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:00 am

Once Barack Obama said that babies were a punishment:

“Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old,” he said. “I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.

But now we learn that in Obamacare, pregnancy is not simply a punishment, it is a disease.

Covering contraception is cost neutral since it saves money by keeping women healthy and preventing spending on other health services,”

Preventing this “disease” is supposed to save big money.

Democratic chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz: “[Contraception costs] about $700 a year. That’s real money.”

Typical of democrats, something is provided for “free” at someone else’s cost.

Privately, however, insurers say there’s nothing “free” about preventing unwarranted pregnancies. They say the mandate also covers costly surgical sterilization procedures, and that in any case even the pill has up-front costs.

“Saying it’s revenue-neutral doesn’t mean it’s free and that you’re not paying for it,” an industry source told The Hill.

Doctors still have to be paid to prescribe the pill, drugmakers and pharmacists have to be paid to provide it – and all that money has to come from insurance premiums, not future hypothetical savings, the source said.

Arizona debate preview: The stakes for the four candidates

When Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer parlayed the leverage that she had by threatening to move Arizona’s primary up and cause chaos in the primary calendar to get Arizona a nationally televised GOP debate, she ensured that all eyes would be on her state.

With Mitt Romney struggling in Michigan, Santorum challenging Romney’s front-runner status, Gingrich needing to climb back into the race and Paul being Paul, tonight’s debate will be critical in influencing not only the next three weeks in the GOP primary but perhaps being a determinative debate.

Here are the stakes for the four candidates going into the debate:

A trial court in Iran has issued its final verdict, ordering a Christian pastor to be put to death for leaving Islam and converting to Christianity, according to sources close to the pastor and his legal team.

Supporters fear Youcef Nadarkhani, a 34-year-old father of two who was arrested over two years ago on charges of apostasy, may now be executed at any time without prior warning, as death sentences in Iran may be carried out immediately or dragged out for years.

It is unclear whether Nadarkhani can appeal the execution order.

“The world needs to stand up and say that a man cannot be put to death because of his faith,” said Jordan Sekulow, executive director of The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ).

In fact, Santorum’s support among women in this latest Gallup poll is stronger than his support among men.

In the week of Feb. 13-19, according to Gallup’s presidential primary tracking poll of registered Republican voters and Republican-leaning independents, Santorum led Romney 34 percent to 29 percent among men and 36 percent to 26 percent among women.

The FBI has removed hundreds of counterterrorism training documents after a months-long review found inaccuracies and other problems in their description of Muslims.

The review was triggered after a September blog in Wired magazine revealed training documents that reportedly called the Prophet Muhammad a “cult leader,” claimed “devout” Muslims have been generally violent for hundreds of years and made other controversial statements.

The FBI did not get into details about which documents were taken out, but a law enforcement source confirmed to Fox News on Tuesday that hundreds were removed because they were deemed “not consistent with the highest professional standards and the FBI’s core values.”

Who was behind the money to stop Keystone XL?

[HotAir.com]

posted at 4:55 pm on February 20, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

For those who were dismayed by the President’s decision to nix the Keystone XL pipeline, you may think it was an effort orchestrated primarily from the White House. While that certainly was part of it, you may have noticed a rather prominent and very public campaign taking place to stop the project showing up in advertisements, mailings and less obvious whisper campaigns across the nation. Who pays for all of that?

The Daily Caller has a lengthy investigative piece out today which sheds a bit of light on the subject. In it, we find out that they have uncovered a presentation dating back several years where some well financed groups vowed to dump significant amounts of cash into bringing development to a screeching halt. And who was behind it? The Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

Happy George Washington’s Birthday!

[RedState.com]

Posted by Daniel Horowitz (Diary)

Monday, February 20th at 2:02PM EST

Many of us are off of work today, but are unaware of the true origin of this holiday.  Indeed, today is not Presidents’ Day; it is the legal holiday to celebrate George Washington’s birthday (his actual birthday is Wednesday).  Washington’s Birthday has been usurped by liberals (and marketers), as it has been morphed into a generic celebration of all American presidents.

In 1885, President Chester Arthur signed the original bill to make Washington’s birthday – February 22 – a federal holiday.  For the first 83 years, the holiday was celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday.  It wasn’t until 1968, when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holidays Act, that the holiday was moved to the third Monday in February.  Now, the holiday can only fall out between Lincoln’s (Feb. 12) and Washington’s birthdays, but never on February 22, the original date of the holiday.  There was no official act of Congress that changed the name of the holiday (although an earlier draft the 1968 law did), but the random date opened the door for those with influence over the culture to corrupt the name.  Many states, including my home state, officially call it Presidents’ Day.

(Reuters) – Iran has stopped selling crude to British and French companies, the oil ministry said on Sunday, in a retaliatory measure against fresh EU sanctions on the Islamic state’s lifeblood, oil.

“Exporting crude to British and French companies has been stopped … we will sell our oil to new customers,” spokesman Alireza Nikzad was quoted as saying by the Ministry of Petroleum website.

The European Union in January decided to stop importing crude from Iran from July 1 over its disputed nuclear program, which the West says is aimed at building bombs. Iran denies this.

Iran’s oil minister said on February 4 that the Islamic state would cut its oil exports to “some” European countries.

SANTORUM SKEWERS CHARLIE ROSE OVER CONTRACEPTION ‘GOTCHA’ QUESTION

[ConservativeWatchNews.com]

By Justin Waldman, February 18, 2012

YouTube.com -  FreedomsFool2009

It’s not over ’til it’s over!

Coming up from the underdog, Senator Rick Santorum is gaining momentum like wildfire.  Some people are calling him the new ‘frontrunner’.  Check out this  Google Trends chart from today, February 18, 2012.  This is not a poll, but a significant chatter meter of how candidates are doing.

While polls, when properly calculated, are move scientific, it is obvious that all polling is not on the same page.  We believe that there is some affecting of bias by the mainstream media.  We have recently found out that Media Matters has been linked to access to the White House perhaps for the purpose of generating a ‘consistent’ front on all the networks, just like in the last election (2008).

By God, it’s not going to work this time.  The American people know what you guys are doing.  People like George Soros, David Brock, etc., are in bed with the Obama Administration to pull together the same ‘slick trick’ they did last time.

Not gonna work.  This time we not only have the record of a failed president, but we have full knowledge of the intentions of this administration.  We know that the job numbers are being cooked to look good on the surface, but in reality, we know that the real number much higher.

The ‘tax cut’ Congress passed is a bad idea. It’s not a tax cut, its taking money from Social Security receipts and calling it a tax cut.  Why is it that Social Security has always been the victim of legislative robbery?  We know that Social Security is funded by current, on-going tax receipts from Social Security taxing.  Where is the money coming from to replace those funds?

It’s continuing to be obvious that President Obama is secretly and willingly trying to crash this economy. This is the worst ‘tax and spend’ administration since Woodrow Wilson!  It’s even worse than the Carter administration.  We need a REAL CONSERVATIVE.  We believe Sen.Rick Santorum is that man to get this nation back in the direction it should be going.

CBO: U.S. enduring the longest period of high unemployment since the Great Depression

After three years with unemployment topping 8 percent, the U.S. has seen the longest period of high unemployment since the Great Depression, the Congressional Budget Office noted in a report issued today.

[Dems Tout GOP Payroll Tax Plan as Political Victory.]

And, despite some recent good news on the economic front, the CBO is still predicting that unemployment will remain above 8 percent until 2014. The report also notes that, including those who haven’t sought work in the past four weeks and those who are working part-time but seeking full-time employment, the unemployment rate would be 15 percent.

The CBO made its comments in a report examining the long-term effects of joblessness, and possible policy options to boost employment, including unemployment insurance reforms and job training programs. The report came at the request of Democratic Michigan Rep. Sander Levin, but Republicans quickly jumped on the chance to bash President Obama’s stimulus program, which is also reaching its three-year anniversary today.

Gingrich to get another $10 million from casino backer – sources

Billionaire tycoon fueling Gingrich campaign ads[Sheldon Adelson, left, and Newt Gingrich, right]

UPDATED 11:38 a.m. ET — H/T DrudgeReport.com

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s faltering campaign is about to get another shot in the arm, CBS News has learned.

Billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson plans to give another $10 million to the outside group backing the former Georgia lawmaker who is running behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, a source close to Adelson told CBS News.

Adleson and his family have already given $11 million to “Winning our Future,” the super PAC backing Gingrich. The group, which bombarded the airwaves in South Carolina last month ahead of the primary there, is largely credited with helping Gingrich win in the Palmetto state.

The latest $10 million cash injection would raise the Adelson family’s contribution to $21 million, and a different source close to Adelson said he is prepared to drop another $4 million for a total of $25 million. The Huffington Post calculated that the billionaire casino owner earns about $3.3 million an hour.

Conservative Hispanic group defends Rubio over Reid remark

rubio_marco_020912.jpg

AP – Feb. 9, 2012: Sen. Marco Rubio addresses the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C.

A conservative Hispanic group is coming to the defense of Republican Sen. Marco Rubio after Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid questioned the Cuban-American lawmaker’s commitment to “Hispanic issues” given his early opposition to an ambassadorial nominee who is Puerto Rican.

Reid made the remark in an interview with Politico. Reid criticized Rubio for initially opposing President Obama’s nomination of Mari Carmen Aponte for ambassador to El Salvador.

“In Nevada, this woman is seen by the Puerto Rican community, the Hispanic community, as really somebody who is an up-and-rising star. … I just think it’s a mistake for someone who is supposedly representing Hispanic issues to do what (Rubio) has done,” Reid said.

But Alfonso Aguilar, executive director of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, called the criticism by Reid and others “appalling.”
