Media Matters enjoyed fundraising surge at start of Obama administration

Media Matters — Shown here is Media Matters founder David Brock.
Media Matters enjoyed a surge in fundraising after the start of the Obama administration — nearly doubling its revenues in the first two years of the president’s administration, according to tax returns obtained by The Daily Caller.
The Daily Caller found that Media Matters and its lobbying arm Media Matters Action Network raked in $14.6 million in 2010, compared with $8.1 million in 2009.
The nonprofit organization, whose tax-exempt status has been questioned by several lawmakers curious about its political activities, saw its fundraising on the rise, according to the latest available returns, even though about half of the groups earnings in 2010 came from just 21 donors, including two unidentified contributors who gave more than $1 million apiece.

[Example flier]Do you pay for your coffee each day with cash? Express an interest in remote-controlled airplanes? According to fliers created by the FBI and Bureau of Justice Assistance for distribution to a variety of businesses, this could be considered indications of terrorist tendencies, the Huffington Post reports.
The 25 fliers part of the campaign “Communities Against Terrorism” are targeted toward “threat areas,” which include airport service providers, beauty/drug suppliers, construction sites, hobby shops, Internet cafes, martial arts, rental cars and tattoo parlors, among others. Each target area comes with a downloadable flier profiling activity employees could look for to detect potential terrorists. See all the fliers here.
It is unclear when exactly these fliers were produced, but a grant number that funded the fliers, as printed at the bottom of each template, appears to have been issued in 2007.

How a Republican President can undo everything Obama’s done [Reader Post]
[FloppingAces.net]
Barack Obama has made it easy. As they say at Nike
Barack Obama has hinted at becoming a dictator
“As I mentioned when I was at La Raza a few weeks back, I wish I had a magic wand and could make this all happen on my own,” Obama told a meeting of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. “There are times where — until Nancy Pelosi is speaker again — I’d like to work my way around Congress.”
He thinks he has an obligation to take action without Congress
then I have an obligation as President to do what I can without them.
It’s official. We now have a dictator.

Washington Post Boosts Liberal ‘Wedge Issue’ Spin on Birth Control Mandate
[Newsbusters.org]
By Matthew Balan | February 14, 2012
On Monday, the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent forwarded a liberal talking point, that the Obama administration’s controversial mandate for coverage of abortifacients and contraception without a co-pay would be used as a “wedge issue” by Republicans. Sargent also highlighted a split inside the GOP over the so-called “accommodation” made by the President on Friday.
Sargent continued by highlighting that “Mitch McConnell vowed over the weekend to turn the battle against Obama’s proposal into a crusade that won’t end until the White House backs down. But as Igor Volsky notes, two GOP Senators — Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins — have voiced cautious support for Obama’s compromise, breaking with the idea that it’s an assault on religious liberty.” As you might expect, the Washington Post blogger didn’t point out that the two senators from Maine are among the most moderate in the Republican caucus. He also buried the detail that Volsky is the Health Care and LGBT Editorfor the left-wing website Think Progress. After excerpting from statements given by Snowe and Collins, Sargent gave his left-leaning take on how the controversy might continue as a political issue:Make no mistake: This dynamic will be crucial going forward. If more Republicans decide that Obama’s proposal is politically or substantively difficult to attack, it could encourage Dems to express greater unity behind the plan, and further marginalize opponents of it, making it tougher to continue this fight. Religious Freedom Group Files Lawsuit Against Obama Contraception Mandate
[TheBlaze.com]

Billy Hallowell
Considering the fact that the 2012 presidential election is only months away, the Obama administration‘s missteps in handling the Health and Human Services Department’s contraceptive mandate are stunning. At best, the administration failed to gauge the Catholic Church‘s full fury when considering the realization of impending women’s services requirements. Now, the rhetoric coming from those opposed the the measures has reached a boiling point, with one group already launching legal battles against the initiative.
On Friday, Obama attempted to temper the storm by releasing plans for an “accommodation” that would exempt religiously-affiliated universities and institutions from being forced to directly offer contraceptives and other controversial services. As the Blaze reported, under the “compromise,” the insurers that these faith-related groups contract with will, indeed, be forced to cover contraceptives for those employees who wish to receive them.

Yes, the “Truth Team” is here to correct all the lies about the budget process. Michael Czin of Obama for America tweets that the new squad will “help communicate a positive message about the President’s record of keeping his word.”

Bloomberg evicts churches from using public schools, but allows labor unions

[HumanEvents.com]
By: Jason Matter
February 10, 2012
Should religious institutions be able to rent public property just like any other community group?
If you’re New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the answer is a resounding no, a decision that has angered local communities and is poised to kick out dozens churches from meeting in New York City public schools even though other groups, including labor unions, are granted full access.
“Houses of worship throughout the city consider this policy to be nothing short of discrimination, and we will make that known,” said Fernando Cabrera, a Democratic city councilman representing the Bronx. “Evicting [churches] hurts people and neighborhoods by denying them the social and spiritual services they desperately need, which in my district includes tutoring services, soup kitchens and more,” he added.
At issue is whether or not allowing religious organizations access to public schools during off-hours is an “endorsement” of that particular religion’s belief system. For the past 10 years an injunction issued by the U.S. District Court of New York said that churches can, in fact, rent out school facilities just like any other group. But a recent ruling by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals defied the lower court’s ruling, agreeing with the Department of Education that granting churches equal access to vacant government buildings amounts to a subsidy of religion.

The $26 billion mortgage settlement: who gets help and how
[CSMonitor.org]
The main thrust of the $26 billion mortgage settlement is to help homeowners whose homes are ‘under water.’ Refinancing a reduced loan will lower payments and help people facing foreclosure stay in their homes.
Posted by CWN: February 10, 2012
By Ron Scherer
NEW YORK -The much heralded $26 billion settlement Thursday of a lawsuit brought by states’ attorneys general against major banks for their poor servicing of mortgages will help “a lot of families,” President Obama proclaimed.
So who is being helped?
The main thrust of the settlement is to help homeowners whose mortgages are “under water.” In other words, they owe more than their home is worth.
As part of the settlement, the banks agreed to lower the principal owed on loans by about $20,000 for 2 million people in the process of foreclosure, agreed to commit $3 billion to help homeowners refinance at 5.25 percent, and will send checks of about $1,800 to about 750,000 people who lost their homes to foreclosure between 2008 and 2011.

Bellwether: Santorum blows past Gingrich in Pennsylvania, now leads Romney by one
[HotAir.com]
posted at 8:37 pm on February 9, 2012 by Allahpundit
I know what you’re thinking. “Who cares, AP? It’s his home state and their primary isn’t until the last week of April.” True. Pennsylvania might not matter much. But these numbers are important right now because they might — might — give us a window into how the race is going next door in Ohio, one of the key states voting on March 6, a.k.a. Super Tuesday.Ohio could matter a lot.
The statewide poll of 500 Republicans showed Santorum’s support more than doubled from 14 percent six weeks ago to 30 percent, putting him in a statistical dead heat with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who increased his support to 29 percent from 18 percent. Santorum’s gain was former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s loss, as his numbers here plunged from 35 percent to 13 percent…
James Lee, president of Susquehanna Polling and Research, which conducted the poll, said Santorum’s growing strength among Republicans suggests conservatives are tuning in to the race.
“Rick speaks their language. They believe he’s the real deal, but they seem to draw the line when it comes to moving on to the fall,” Lee said. “They don’t seem to think he’s electable. That’s the real conundrum he’s in: How does he persuade mainstream voters he’s the guy who can win in November?” [Yes!]

Georgia’s Obama Eligibility Decision: Legally Incorrect And Ethically Indefensible
[ImpeachObamaCampaign.com]
Posted by Doug Book on February 9, 2012
Given previous rulings by Judge Malihi in the Obama case, many had assumed things might go badly for the acting president. Yet the judge’s 10 page decision could hardly have done more to accommodate defendant Obama and his attorney, especially in light of their having ignored court orders, subpoenas and the hearing itself.
And many of those who have reviewed Judge Malihi’s decision find it to be supported by neither fact nor law.
Of the statements made by the judge in his decision, the following are among the most objectionable to legal observers:
1.) “This decision is entirely based on the law, as well as the evidence and legal arguments presented at the hearing.” (page 3)
In actuality there was NO evidence “presented at the hearing,” in response to subpoenas or submitted pre-trial upon which Judge Malihi could base his decision, as Barack Obama provided nothing, either in documentary or verbal form. Yet Malihi states “the following FACTS are considered: 1.) Mr. Obama was born in the United States; 2.) Mr. Obama’s mother was a citizen of the United States at the time of his birth…” (my caps) (page 6)
From what evidence placed in the court record did Malihi obtain these “facts?” No one seems to know.

Feds announce $25B settlement over foreclosure abuse
[FoxNews.com]
Published February 09, 2012

AP – Feb. 2, 2012: Attorney General Eric Holder testifies on Capitol Hill.
WASHINGTON – Federal officials announced Thursday that 49 states have accepted a $25 billion foreclosure-abuse settlement with the five largest mortgage lenders — a deal that primarily helps underwater homeowners but pays just $2,000 to those already wrongly foreclosed upon.
The bulk of the deal requires the banks to reduce some loans and refinance mortgages for underwater borrowers. Oklahoma was the lone holdout to the agreement.
President Obama described the deal as a “landmark settlement” that would “begin to turn the page on an era of recklessness” while speeding relief to hard-hit homeowners.
It is the biggest settlement involving a single industry since a 1998 multistate tobacco deal. Under the agreement, five major banks — Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and Ally Financial — will reduce loans for nearly 1 million households.

Obama to give 10 states a pass on No Child Left Behind deadline
[FoxNews.com]
Published February 09, 2012

AP – Feb. 7, 2012: President Barack Obama talks with, from left, Janet Nieto, Gwynelle Condino, and Ana Nieto, all from Presidio, Texas, in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington during the White House Science Fair.
WASHINGTON – President Obama is set to give 10 states a pass regarding an approaching deadline under the No Child Left Behind law, after the states struggled to meet the proficiency standards for reading and math.
The executive action will circumvent Congress, which has been stuck on how to rewrite the law. A White House official confirmed to Fox News on Thursday that the 10 states will receive “flexibility” allowing them to miss 2014 targets for student proficiency. However, those states will be required to set new targets, and implement “comprehensive” plans to reward high-performing schools, punish low-performing schools, prepare students for college and the work force and evaluate school officials.

Santorum sweeps back into the race
[HotAir.com]
posted at 8:40 am on February 8, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
Last night when discussing the trends in the three non-binding Republican contests, I tweeted that Rick Santorum’s win in Missouri was only surprising in gaining a majority, but that a win in Minnesota would be surprising — and a win in Colorado would be shocking. As it happens, National Journal agrees with that assessment. Santorum shocked the Republican race with a clean sweep of Tuesday’s caucuses and primary, and may have pushed himself into serious consideration as the long-sought conservative consolidation alternative to Mitt Romney:Rick Santorum on Tuesday completed his sweep of states with a stunning upset of Mitt Romney in Colorado’s caucus, according to state Republican officials, shaking up a GOP presidential race that has seen more drama than Romney’s campaign envisioned even a week ago.
Santorum earlier won Minnesota’s caucus and a non-binding Missouri primary. Romney – who won Colorado handily in 2008 — had long remained the odds-on favorite to prevail in that state’s caucus, as polls had shown him with a double-digit lead.
A jubilant Santorum told supporters that he isn’t the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney:
“I don’t stand here to claim to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney,” he told supporters earlier in the evening. “I stand here to be the conservative alternative to Barack Obama.”

FBI Warns of ‘Anti-Government’ Extremists
[BigGovernment.com]

by Wynton Hall
At a Federal Bureau of Investigation conference on Monday, FBI agents said state and local law enforcement should be on alert for people who consider themselves “sovereign citizens,” individuals who believe they are not subject to any type of government authority.
According to Reuters, these anti-government extremists “may refuse to pay taxes, defy government environmental regulations and believe the United States went bankrupt by going off the gold standard.”
Routine encounters with police can turn violent “at the drop of a hat,” said Stuart McArthur, deputy assistant director in the FBI’s counterterrorism division.
“We thought it was important to increase the visibility of the threat with state and local law enforcement,” he said.
In May 2010, two West Memphis, Arkansas, police officers were shot and killed in an argument that developed after they pulled over a “sovereign citizen” in traffic.

Santorum steps up to the plate
[HumanEvents.com]
A big day dawns for the dark-horse conservative candidate.
by John Hayward
February 07, 2012
Tuesday could be Rick Santorum’s big day – his chance to break back into the news cycle with some strong primary performances, and make the case that he’s a better choice than Newt Gingrich for those seeking an alternative to Mitt Romney.
On the national level, it’s really still a fairly close race. An ABC News / Washington Post poll concluded on the eve of this weekend’s Nevada caucuses had Romney in the lead with 38 percent support, but Gingrich, Santorum, and Ron Paul were fairly close together with 24, 18, and 14 percent, respectively. Very few delegates have been assigned by the primaries and caucuses held thus far. There is still plenty of time for the race to change.
It’s the local polling that makes Tuesday exciting for the Santorum campaign. Missouri is holding a “just for show” meaningless primary ahead of its March caucuses, but Santorum is looking very good there. He’s just a hair behind Gingrich, and a bit ahead of Romney, but Gingrich didn’t qualify for the primary, so Santorum has a great opening to win over those march Missouri caucus-goers.

Supreme Court Case Could Threaten Big Labor’s Ability to Deduct from Public Employee Paychecks
[BigGovernment.com]
Posted by CWN: February 7, 2012
WASHINGTON, D.C. – It’s no secret that Big Labor is dependent on dues and fees automatically withdrawn from the payroll checks of union members and non-members alike.
The automatic deductions funnel millions of dollars into public sector union coffers each year, with a portion frequently going toward partisan political causes and liberal candidates who promise to preserve or expand the unions’ forced dues racket.
But this vicious cycle is finally being challenged in states and municipalities around the nation. Perhaps the most important challenge, Knox vs. Service Employees International Union, was heard earlier this month by the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court.
The case is one of a growing number of examples of how public employees, including public school teachers, are pushing back against forced union dues – something many consider a violation of their First Amendment rights. American citizens should not be forced to financially support an organization or political causes they don’t agree with, union objectors rightly contend.
By forcing members and non-members to subsidize its radical political agenda, Big Labor may have finally cooked its Golden Goose.
SEIU wants to run from the case
The Supreme Court case stems from a “special assessment” that was automatically withdrawn from union and non-union state employees’ checks in 2005 to help defeat a ballot proposal in California that would have made it illegal to force employees to pay dues that would be used for political purposes.
The plaintiffs, who are non-union members who pay a reduced fee in lieu of union dues, claim their rights were violated when they were charged more than their regular fees to support a union political effort.

Archbishop to US Troops: Obamacare Reg ‘Is a Blow to a Freedom for Which You Have Seen Battle Buddies Fall’
[CNSNews.com]
U.S. Army Capt. Carl Subler, a Catholic chaplain, celebrates Mass with soldiers from the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment at the helicopter loading zone at Forward Operating Base Wolverine, Zabul, Afghanistan, Dec. 12, 2009. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Christine Jones)(CNSNews.com) – Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who leads the Roman Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services, wrote a letter to be read at all Sunday Masses for U.S. military personnel around the world that said that a regulation issued by the Obama Administration under the new federal health care law was “a blow” to a freedom that U.S. troops have not only fought to defend but for which some have recently died in battle.
“It is a blow to a freedom that you have fought to defend and for which you have seen your buddies fall in battle,” the archbishop wrote.
Another line in his letter said: “We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law.”

MSM Looks For Any Reason To Declare Tea Party Dead [Not gonna happen!]
![]()
[BigJournalism.com]
Huh? what does that mean?
She concludes, as many in the Activist Old Media have, that a Romney victory in Nevada is a defeat for the tea party.
My conclusion; the media is looking for any reason, any reason, to declare the tea party dead. Plus, a few recent polls show that Romney actually is getting tea party support.
The Super Bowl is a big game so that means the tea party is dead. There is snow in Denver, so the tea party is dead. As long as you say the tea party is dead, you have a spot on a panel with the Activist Old Media.
It just amazes the media that Mitt Romney can run away with a state like Nevada, with a prominent tea party contingent (albeit for the first time in the primaries; it’s too early to say it’s a trend), so they conclude the tea party must be dead.
Nothing could be further from the truth.

Romney: On to Maine, Minnesota, and Colorado
[BigGovernment.com]

Romney greets a voter in MaineMitt Romney has now decisively won (or statically tied) in four states that went for Obama in 2008: Iowa, New Hampshire, Florida, and Nevada. He will assuredly win in Colorado and Arizona–two other parts of the Mormon corridor–and in Michigan, where he is a favored son.
And yet all but Arizona (which John McCain, a carpet bagger, barely held) went to Barack Obama in 2008. What does this mean? For Republican primaries, this is very odd. No presidential candidate in American history has ever won the nomination without winning South Carolina.
In Nevada, Romney won among nearly every group he was expected to (only 9 percent of Mormons voted against him) and did nicely among groups he wasn’t expected to (the Tea Partiers and evangelicals). It may well be that the evangelicals and Tea Parties that voted against him in Iowa and South Carolina were an aberration.

Unions Plan to “Occupy CPAC” [Obama's Thugs Won't Stop!]

This week will bring the Conservative Political Action Conference to Washington, D.C., one of the largest gatherings of conservative activists nationwide. CPAC has long been the target of liberal ire, but this year, the AFL-CIO is planning a sort of “Occupy” protest. As LaborUnionReport documents:
[U]nion bosses and their adopted #OccupyDC progeny appear to be planning to disrupt and lay siege to the conservative conference… According to the AFL-CIO’s Washington DC Metro Council website, “Actions are currently being planned for noontime andafter work on Friday, February 10.”
Townhall will be there as a cosponsor of the event, and we’ll absolutely bring any breaking news about union goons attempting to disrupt the proceedings straight to you. Seems strange that after their disastrous attempt to disrupt the Americans For Prosperity Summit that the union goons would try again, but I suppose the Left have always been slow on the uptake. Wisconsin Election Officials Reverse Course, Refuse to Make Recall Petitions Public

by Brett Healy
AMERICA, THIS IS MEGA-CORRUPTION!
Here’s an idea from the misnamed Wisconsin Government Accountability Board: Let’s make the attempt to recall Governor Scott Walker even nuttier.
On Monday morning the Wisconsin ‘Elections Watchdogs’ alerted media that the Walker recall petitions would be available sometime later that day. By dinnner time, they basically said, never mind.
You can’t make this stuff up.
From our coverage:
Stunner: Walker Recall Petitions NOT Available for Online Review
[Madison, Wisc…] The Wisconsin Government Accountability Board has not posted scanned copies of the Governor Walker recall petitions online despite promises to the citizens of Wisconsin that they would do so.
GAB staff delivered copies of the scans to the Governor’s campaign late last week. The campaign, with the assistance of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, began reviewing the petitions at satellite offices across the state this weekend.

Israeli Facilities in U.S., Worldwide on High Alert Against Iran
[Newsmax.com]

By Newsmax Wires
Israeli facilities worldwide are on high alert against an attack from Iran, according to an internal security document obtained by ABC News.
“We predict that the threat on our sites around the world will increase … on both our guarded sites and ‘soft’ sites,” read a letter by the head of security for the Consul General for the Mid-Atlantic States, ABC News reported. Guarded sites are government facilities like embassies and consulates; “soft sites” are Jewish synagogues, schools and community centers.
Police and intelligence officials in U.S. and Canadian cities — including New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Toronto — have increased patrols at Israeli government locations and Jewish institutions, ABC News reported.
The United States and Israel, meanwhile, are publicly disagreeing over timing for a potential attack on Iran to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons, Bloomberg News reported.
“There’s a growing concern — more than a concern — that the Israelis, in order to protect themselves, might launch a strike without approval, warning or even foreknowledge,” Aaron David Miller, a former Mideast peace negotiator in the Clinton administration, said Friday.

AP – Feb. 3, 2012: The Susan Komen For The Cure international headquarters are shown in the Dallas suburb of Addison, Texas.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced Friday it was reversing its decision to end grants to Planned Parenthood, after facing mounting pressure from pro-choice lawmakers and accusations that the breast cancer awareness organization had bowed to political influences.
“We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” the group said in a statement.
