‘Obamacare’ Poll Finds 42% of Americans Unaware It’s Law

[ABCNews.com]

ObamaCareSymbol-with-soviet-sickleA new poll finds that many Americans are confused about the health care overhaul legislation commonly called “Obamacare.  ”The Kaiser Family Foundation released results of a non-partisan study today finding more than 40 percent did not even know the law was in place.

“Four in ten Americans (42%) are unaware that the ACA [Affordable Care Act] is still the law of the land,” the report says, “including 12 percent who believe the law has been repealed by Congress, 7 percent who believe it has been overturned by the Supreme Court and 23 percent who say they don’t know enough to say what the status of the law is.”

The survey showed public opinion on Obamacare is at its second-lowest rating in the past two years. Less than half – 40 percent – of adults viewed the ACA favorably, whereas 35 percent said they viewed it unfavorably.  Another 24 percent said they did not know or refused to answer.

Atlas Exclusive: Robert Spencer: Can We Survive Four More Years of Obama?

[AtlasShrugs.com]

Monday, November 5, 2012 – Pamela Geller

By Robert Spencer

Can America afford four more years of Barack Obama as President of the United States? In the most literal terms, probably not: his reckless deficit spending can’t be sustained indefinitely, and as he has campaigned on a platform of more free goodies for everyone, it won’t be much longer before the gravy train runs out. Meanwhile, his relentless class warfare rhetoric has sown the seeds of civil discord for years to come. But even worse could be in store for us if Obama is reelected.

Now that pro-Sharia Islamic supremacist regimes are installed, thanks to Barack Obama, in Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya, the oppression of women and non-Muslims is certain to escalate in those countries. They are also certain only to grow in their anti-Americanism, and may try to unite in an attempt to restore the caliphate, which will only bring more bloodshed and strife to the region. And since the caliph is the only one authorized (and required) in Islamic law to wage offensive jihad against Infidels, if they succeed in choosing one, the result will not be happy for America and the West.

Chick-fil-A spokesman dies amid furor over same-sex marriage

The chief spokesman for Chick-fil A died early today amid the furor sparked by his boss’ biblical opposition to same-sex marriage.

The Georgia-based fast-food giant did not cite a cause of death for 60-year-old Don Perry, vice president of public relations, but local news reports said he died of a heart attack, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says. He had worked for the fast-food giant for 29 years.

“Don was a member of our Chick-fil-A family for nearly 29 years,” the company said in a statement. “For many of you in the media, he was the spokesperson for Chick-fil-A. He was a well-respected and well-liked media executive in the Atlanta and University of Georgia communities, and we will all miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Mayor Bloomberg’s Sweet Sugary Nanny State

[Cato@Liberty]

Posted by David Boaz – May 31, 2012

“A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down,” sang a legendary nanny. But today’s most powerful nanny, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, won’t tolerate that. He plans to ban the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters, and even street carts, the New York Times reports.

Mayor Bloomberg has lots of facts at his fingertips: Many Americans are overweight. Consumption of sugar can cause weight gain. All true, and a good reason for Mike Bloomberg to watch his diet.

But why should he watch MY diet? And the diets of 8 million New Yorkers, most of them adults? If he thinks New Yorkers should consume less sugar, let him hold a press conference. But giving people information isn’t good enough for him. Sometimes he gives people information, and they still don’t act the way he thinks they should. So what’s a billionaire mayor to do? He could bribe them, I suppose. But as Otter said, that could take years and cost millions of lives. Well, millions of dollars anyway. So, like Otter, he’s decided to go with “a really futile and stupid gesture” instead.

Coroner: Davy Jones died of heart attack

Davy Jones, lead singer of the Monkees. (Reuters)An autopsy confirms that Davy Jones, star of 1960s band The Monkees, died of a heart attack.

The medical examiner’s office in Martin County, Fla., says authorities completed their examination Thursday morning, a day after Jones was rushed to the hospital. Toxicology tests could take another six or eight weeks, but there’s no sign anything else is to blame for the 66-year-old heartthrob’s death.

Jones rocketed to stardom in the 1960s as a member of The Monkees, a made-for-TV rock band patterned after the Beatles. Though their televisioin show lasted just two years and the group ultimately broke up, they have endured with such chart-topping hits as “I’m a Believer” and “Daydream Believer.”

A spokeswoman for Jones says funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

‘Born Alive’ and ‘Partial Birth Abortion’ Barry [Barack] Beckons!

[Editor:  This story is from an archive by Conservative Viewpoint (GDMP.net), our original website name.  It was posted directly from: http://www.floppingaces.netToday, Rush Limbaugh brought up a Politico posting in which Newt Gingrich was misquoted as bringing up the issue of "partial birth abortion" when, in fact, Newt had brought up an issue for which Barack Obama supported when he was Illinois State senator.  The issue that the Speaker brought up was 'infanticide' which has been deemed by some as post birth baby killing by a physician when a baby is born alive after a botched abortion.]

[INFANTICIDE] Caution: The graphic herein may be disturbing to some; Obama supports this!

Vote for McCain-Palin, Nov 4th!We are being told that the Obama campaign plans to make a play for the Catholic vote. His margins among them are plummeting. An article by John M. Broder in the New York Times grapples anxiously with the problem. What can Obama do now? Maybe, as a [token] act of atonement, they can allow the younger Robert Casey to address the convention? (For those who don’t remember, Robert Casey Sr., governor of Pennsylvania was NOT allowed to address the convention, because he was pro-life. A lot of Catholics have not forgotten.)

The article even dares to broach the reason for the precipitous drop. In my mind, that can hardly be a question. Barack Obama has the most radical pro-abortion position in Presidential election history and the word is getting out.

How radical is it? Well for one thing, He opposed a ban on the killing of fetuses born alive during abortion in Illinois. Yes, you read that right. (This was started by the experience of a traumatized abortion nurse who was not even allowed to hold a surviving child, but instructed to put ‘it’ in the trash.) From Broder’s article, this was his rationale:

Mr. Obama has said he had opposed the bill because it was poorly drafted and would have threatened the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade that established abortion as a constitutional right. He said he would have voted for a similar bill that passed the United States Senate because it did not have the same constitutional flaw as the Illinois bill.

Google’s New Plan: Annoy You Into Compliance

[Gizmodo.com]

Posted: January 28, 2012

Google Plus users just got a pretty horrible new feature: search your name, and instead of finding out information about yourself, you’re asked to provide it. Quite simply, Google doesn’t want to give you information until you give it information. Guh.

As Drew Olanoff of The Next Web noted today, if you are using Google’s new Search Plus your World (which is on by default) instead of giving you the results you are looking for, a Google vanity search now prompts you to fill out the remainder of your Google Plus profile. It’s a clear example of Google prioritizing Plus over Search. It’s essentially allowing a social network to hijack your Search screen until you feed it personal data. Your normal results appear below the nag, but when I tried this myself, the prompt took over the entire window of my 13″ screen. Google is increasingly acting like an overbearing second grade teacher. If you don’t share, you can’t have any for yourself.

So what happens if you do try to “complete your profile?” Mine was nearly complete, at 85 percent. I filled out my university information and added a photo to my “scrapbook” (related: what the hell is my scrapbook and who can see it?) which were the only two missing fields in the “Update your profile” window. But that only took me to 95 percent. I tried editing my profile directly from within Google Plus itself, dutifully filling out each and every field, including the really intrusive stuff like my relationship status and “who are you looking for?” (I’m just looking for myself!)

I’m still only at 95 percent. I have no idea what I need to do to get to 100. Maybe it’s some philosophical lesson that represents the fundamental loneliness of the human condition by never allowing you to reach completion. I have no idea.

Illegals Living as ‘Permanent Patients’ in U.S. Hospitals

[PatriotUpdate.com]

January 6, 2012

illegals in us hospitals

Hundreds of patients have been languishing for months or even years in New York City hospitals, despite being well enough to be sent home or to nursing centers for less-expensive care, because they are illegal immigrants or lack sufficient insurance or appropriate housing.

As a result, hospitals are absorbing the bill for millions of dollars in unreimbursed expenses annually while the patients, trapped in bureaucratic limbo, are sometimes deprived of services that could be provided elsewhere at a small fraction of the cost.

“Many of those individuals no longer need that care, but because they have no resources and many have no family here, we, unfortunately, are caring for them in a much more expensive setting than necessary based on their clinical need,” said LaRay Brown, a senior vice president for the city’s Health and Hospitals Corporation. Under state law, public hospitals are not allowed to discharge patients to shelters or to the street.

Medicaid often pays for emergency care for illegal immigrants, but not for continuing care, and many hospitals in places with large concentrations of illegal immigrants, like Texas, California and Florida, face the quandary of where to send patients well enough to leave. Officials in New York City say they have many such patients who are draining money from the health system as the cost of keeping people in acute-care hospitals continues to escalate.

But even if Medicaid pays for some care, taxpayer dollars are ultimately being consumed by patients who could be cared for in nursing homes or other health facilities, and even at home if supportive services were available. Care for a patient languishing in a hospital can cost more than $100,000 a year, while care in a nursing home can cost $20,000 or less.

Patients fit to be discharged from hospitals but having no place to go typically remain more than five years, Ms. Brown said. She estimated that there were about 300 patients in such a predicament throughout the city, most in public hospitals or higher-priced skilled public nursing homes, though a smattering were in private hospitals.

At this time every year, with the influx of tourists into New York, I get a little bit more perspective on what it really means to be present in your life. It comes, remarkably, from trying to negotiate the jammed sidewalks and store aisles in the city.

I like the bustle and energy of the holidays. I am pretty unfazed by crowds because if I’m in them it’s usually voluntary. And there is something exhilarating about being in this part of the world in December and witnessing the wonder.

But here’s where I differ from many: I am not prone to take pictures of every darned thing I see. Now, with not only cameras but smartphones and tablets having that capability, it’s like posing has taken over for experiencing. To the tenth power. Chronicling gone wild. Documentation on steroids.

Read Beck’s Message on Future of Media: ‘We Are on the Verge of Revolution’

[TheBlaze.com]

Glenn Beck laid out his vision on the future of digital media Tuesday, telling an audience at a New York media conference that traditional television is on its way out and an interactive, user-directed experience is on its way in.

Speaking at the Advertising Age Media Evolved conference in Manhattan, two months after the launch of online-only GBTV, Beck suggested the media world is at a crossroads between young and old.

“I don’t know anybody under 30 who is watching television,” Beck said in an onstage interview with Betsy Morgan, president of The Blaze. “We are at a split right now. The generation that is my age — slightly over 50, 55 — they’re not using iPad. They don’t get it, they don’t want it….They’re still using television, that’s their comfort zone. The younger generation, that’s not their comfort zone, it‘s a stupid box that you’re tied to.”

Ad Age describes has more:

Mr. Beck, who called this moment “one of the most exciting times [in media] since the printing press,” forecast a future in which audiences have much more personalized control over content — deciding, for example, to slow down or speed up one of Mr. Beck’s signature, chalkboard-guided tirades with more or less on-screen context.

“It’ll have two arrows — that way to dumb down, that way to dumb up,” he said. “You don’t have to stay at my level, you can go below me, you can go above me. The revolution that’s coming is about the individual.”

Via Jim Treacher, insert the obligatory joke about “parasites” here. That’s the first clip below; the second, also via Treach and fully self-explanatory, shows the “Occupy” ethos in microcosm. Their first, last, and seemingly only goal right now is to stay put at all costs; whatever consequences might flow from that are something they can worry about tomorrow. And that leads directly to the third clip, this time via Verum Serum but also from Occupy Portland. What happens as the reality dawns that the camp is “a growing pressure cooker” filled with drugs and “sex offenders”? (Follow the link to VS if you need a transcript to follow along.) There’s no way for them to clean up without expelling troublemakers in the group, but the troublemakers have as much a right to be there and “protest” as the rest do. The next stage, maybe: “Occupy” leaders joining forces with police to target the miscreants in their midst?

House GOP Reignites Abortion Issue Talks

After a respite from fights over the Federal funding of abortion, House Republicans are moving to revisit the battle through a bill aimed at removing the ties between the government and abortion providers, The Washington Times reported.

The newspaper reported that the proposal would amend the Affordable Care Act to prevent Federally subsidized insurance plans from paying for abortion services.

“The Protect Life Act is a crucial measure that not only returns to the status quo on federal funding for abortion, it also protects health care entities from discrimination that is already occurring under health reform,” Joseph R. Pitts (R-Pa.) said in a hearing.

The debate over funding for abortion came several weeks after Representative Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) demanded that Planned Parenthood Federation of American turn over more than 10 years of documents as part of an investigation by the Energy and Commerce subcommittee, according to POLITICO.

Another part of the bill proposed that insurers and providers would not be required to participate in abortion-related services for their customers, or provide coverage for certain types of birth control, the Times reported.

Large Solar Flares Among Threats To Power Grid

NASA.GOV
On Sept. 22, a large solar flare occurred, as well as several smaller flares and a significant coronal mass ejection.

Two major threats have the ability to partially or completely destroy the power grid: electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) and coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

You might remember Saddam Hussein threatening to use chemical weapons against both the United States and Israel during the first and second Gulf wars.

You might also remember that we responded to the threat by promising to “respond with overwhelming force and extract a very high price should he be foolish enough to use chemical weapons on United States forces.”

Many people thought that this meant dropping a nuke on Iraq. While that was definitely a possibility, it’s much more likely that our response would have been for us to use an EMP caused by detonating a nuclear bomb 100 miles to 300 miles above the Earth’s surface.

Rush: Bachmann Really Jumped the Shark on Gardasil

After my earlier post strongly objecting to Michele Bachmann’s attempt to link the Gardasil vaccination to “mental retardation,” the response has been nearly unanimous among commenters — and as it turns out, pundits too.  The Boss Emeritus, whose rational objections to Perry’s Gardasil mandate threaten to be overwhelmed by Bachmann’s demagoguery, tries offering Bachmann some advice on how to deal with the issue in the future.  Rush Limbaugh, on the other hand, concludes that while Bachmann had an otherwise strong showing in last night’s debate, she “jumped the shark” last night and today by repeatedly using an attack that Rush says deserves “shame.”

First, Rush defends Perry to some extent on the issue, calling it a “giant distraction“:

Reuters – An international panel of experts says cellphones are possibly carcinogenic to humans after reviewing details from dozens of published studies.

The statement was issued in Lyon, France, on Tuesday by the International Agency for Research on Cancer after a weeklong meeting of experts. They reviewed possible links between cancer and the type of electromagnetic radiation found in cellphones, microwaves and radar.

The agency is the cancer arm of the World Health Organization and the assessment now goes to WHO and national health agencies for possible guidance on cellphone use.

The group classified cellphones in category 2B, meaning they are possibly carcinogenic to humans. Other substances in that category include the pesticide DDT and gasoline engine exhaust.

The next: Wes Leonard on the gym floor, his enlarged heart failing, his life fading just a few moments after his victory layup. Packed bleachers suddenly stunned by an event that made basketball seem a distant, unimportant memory.

A day after Leonard died from an enlarged heart, this small town near Lake Michigan remembered an “all-American kid” whose athletic heroics had been local legend since middle school, when opposing coaches sometimes asked to see his birth certificate, not believing someone so young could be so skilled.

U.S. Officials Recommend Reduced Fluoride Levels in Water

By Steven Reinberg  HealthDay Reporter

U.S. government officials said Friday that the amount of fluoride in the nation’s drinking water should now be set at the lowest recommended level.

Although fluoride is a significant help in preventing cavities and tooth decay, too much of it can cause unattractive spotting on children’s teeth. About two out of five teens have white spots and streaks on their teeth due to too much fluoride, according to a recent government study.

To prevent this problem, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are recommending that the fluoride level in drinking water be set at 0.7 milligrams per liter of water, replacing the current recommended range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams.

Report: Harmful Errors, Accidents Still Common in Hospitals

FoxNews | Reuters

Published November 25, 2010

AP

NEW YORK – Despite a decade of efforts to improve patient safety in hospitals — initially inspired by a seminal report on the problem from the U.S. Institute of Medicine in 2000 — harmful errors and accidents are still common, new research suggests.

The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that between 2002 and 2007, the number of patients experiencing infections acquired in the hospital, medication errors, complications from diagnostic techniques or treatments, and other such “harms” did not change.

Researchers looked at 2,300 patient admission records from 10 randomly selected hospitals in North Carolina. They found 588 incidents of patient harm resulting from medical procedures, medications, or other causes. Two-thirds of these complications were considered preventable by reviewers at the hospitals themselves.

Recently, the U.S. Office of the Inspector General released a report estimating that medical complications contribute to 180,000 patient deaths per year, and that overall, these complications cost Medicare up to $4.4 billion annually.

Marijuana Legalization Measure Loses in California

FoxNews.com | Associated Press

Published November 03, 2010

LOS ANGELES — California voters weren’t high on a ballot measure aimed at legalizing marijuana and appeared to heed warnings of legal chaos and a federal showdown when they defeated the initiative to make the state the first in the nation to allow the recreational use and sale of pot.

In addition, supporters of Proposition 19 blamed Tuesday’s outcome on the conservative leanings of older voters who participate in midterm elections. They acknowledged that young voters had not turned out in sufficient numbers to secure victory but said they were ready to try again in two years.

“It’s still a historic moment in this very long struggle to end decades of failed marijuana prohibition,” said Stephen Gutwillig, California director for the Drug Policy Project. “Unquestionably, because of Proposition 19, marijuana legalization initiatives will be on the ballot in a number of states in 2012, and California is in the mix.”

Tim Rosales, who managed the No on 19 campaign, scoffed at that attitude from the losing side.
