“A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down,” sang a legendary nanny. But today’s most powerful nanny, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, won’t tolerate that. He plans to ban the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters, and even street carts, the New York Times reports.

Mayor Bloomberg has lots of facts at his fingertips: Many Americans are overweight. Consumption of sugar can cause weight gain. All true, and a good reason for Mike Bloomberg to watch his diet.

But why should he watch MY diet? And the diets of 8 million New Yorkers, most of them adults? If he thinks New Yorkers should consume less sugar, let him hold a press conference. But giving people information isn’t good enough for him. Sometimes he gives people information, and they still don’t act the way he thinks they should. So what’s a billionaire mayor to do? He could bribe them, I suppose. But as Otter said, that could take years and cost millions of lives. Well, millions of dollars anyway. So, like Otter, he’s decided to go with “a really futile and stupid gesture” instead.

When he’s in the mood, Mayor Bloomberg can give eloquent testimony to the virtue of freedom when it comes to Muslims –

America is a beacon of freedom, and no place defends those freedoms more fervently, or has been attacked for those freedoms more ferociously, than New York City.

– or gay people:

I have no doubt that in your lifetime, liberty’s light will allow us to see more clearly the truth of our nation’s founding principles, and allow us to see all people, and all couples, as full and equal members of the American family….If government can deny freedom to one, it can deny freedom to all.

But somehow when it’s the mayor’s own sensibilities that are offended, he forgets his eloquent defense of freedom. Suddenly, as White House chief of staff Andrew Card said of President Bush, Bloomberg “sees America as we think about a 10-year-old child.” A child who needs protection. A child who can’t make his own decisions. A child who needs a parent, or a nanny, to tell him what to eat and when to exercise.

In a free society, government doesn’t make our personal decisions for us. We don’t need a Big Brother or a mayoral nanny. We have the right and the responsibility to make our own decisions, so long as we don’t interfere with the rights of others. And even if we make what Mayor Bloomberg views as the wrong decisions.

And speaking of the mayor’s commitment to freedom, who exactly is going to impose this sweeping ban? Not the people, in a referendum. Not a constitutional convention. Not even the city council. This “far-reaching ban,” as the Times describes it, will be imposed on 8 million free citizens of New York by the city’s unelected Board of Health, all of whose members are appointed by . . . the mayor.

The conservative Republican governor’s attempt to fix that state’s budget crisis, by reigning in the public unions’ influence, sent Schultz on a rampage. The liberal talk show host turned his self-titled program, The Ed Show, into a hyper-partisan platform from which union activists, liberal journalists and Wisconsin state Democrats could join Schultz in his drive to oust the “radical” Walker out office.

From February 14, 2011 through May 18, 2012 anti-Walker guests dominated by a count of 237 (99.6%) to 1 (less than .5%). In that same span Schultz devoted a portion or a majority of 128 episodes to attacks on Walker.

Critics of cable news often suggest that MSNBC and Fox News Channel (FNC) are carbon copies of each other with FNC catering to the conservative side. However, over that same time period, Shultz’s 8 PM EDT time slot competitor — FNC’s The O’Reilly Factor — spent only 19 shows discussing Walker and those displayed a more balanced guest list with a total of 12

pro-Walker advocates (44%) to 8 (30%) Walker opponents, with 7 (26%) neutral voices.

Schultz began his obsessive assault on Walker when he opened his February 14, 2011 program by warning his audience that “There is a war brewing, folks…American wage earners are under a ruthless attack by a new group of cold- hearted Republican governors around the country. In the state of Wisconsin, newly-elected Republican Governor Scott Walker is trying to balance the budget on the backs of school teachers, prison guards, and snowplow drivers…Walker is also on a mission to destroy basic human rights, union rights that is, for public employees.”

The next day Schultz brought on the lone voice of support for Walker, GOP state senator Glenn Grothman, but from then on it was a steady stream of union activists, liberal journalists and Democratic officeholders as Schultz operated more like the Wisconsin Democratic State party chair than just your average cable news talk show host.

Democratic Solidarity Now!

When a group of “brave” and “patriotic” Democratic state senators – or as Schultz “affectionately” called them the “Wisconsin 14” – went into hiding, in order to stall Walker’s legislation, Schultz managed to track them down when he took his show on the road to Madison, Wisconsin. On his February 17, 2011 show Schultz absurdly portrayed members of the Wisconsin 14 as heroic resistance fighters: “Joining me now from an undisclosed location is Wisconsin State Senators Frank Risser and Mark Miller and nine other Democratic state senators who are standing up in solidarity for the workers of Wisconsin.”

MRC VIDEO

Look for the Union Label

Schultz liked to invite union activists to The Ed Show as well. Rick Badger from AFSCME Wisconsin, AFL-CIO Wisconsin president Phil Neuenfeldt and Professional Firefighter of Wisconsin president Mahlon Mitchell, who defiantly proclaimed on the August 8, 2011 show: “We didn’t ask for this fight, but I guarantee we will finish this fight,” were treated to warm receptions from Schultz. This isn’t surprising given that, according to the Labor Department, Schultz’s broadcast company received nearly $200,000 from unions.

Walker’s ‘Racist’ Agenda Against Kids

Schultz also brought on his brothers-in-arms in the media. On the February 16, 2011 Ed Show, Sirius/XM liberal talk radio host Joe Madison said the fight against Walker reminded him of “Martin Luther King and the reason he went to Memphis, Tennessee” and compared the pro-Walker forces to “Dixiecrats.” On the March 3, 2011 Ed Show, Schultz railed that Walker’s budget was “racist” because it was “picking on inner city kids.” Fellow MSNBC talker Al Sharpton then came on to agree that the proposal would “pick on” children, “take collective bargaining away” from their parents and “give a tax break to the rich.” John Nichols of the ultra-leftist magazine The Nation was a regular who, on the June 8, 2011 program, joined Schultz in a cartoonish portrayal of the governor as a kid hater:

SCHULTZ: I want to get your take on Governor Scott Walker. He reportedly has removed a portrait of low- income children from the governor’s mansion. And he`s replaced it with a picture of a Bald Eagle. What details do you have on this? Why did he do this?

NICHOLS: Well, as I understand it — and this is something that’s been reported a good deal — when the Walkers came into the governor’s mansion, they made it quite clear to the staff that they didn’t want this picture of these kids from Milwaukee in a prominent place in the mansion.

And so they asked that it be removed and taken over and put in a public space in Milwaukee, so that they could put up other pictures. It’s caused a real stir in Wisconsin. The artist who did the painting has expressed a lot of concern.

And frankly, a lot of other folks have asked why doesn’t this governor want to have pictures of low-income kids in the governor’s mansion? Is it because his budget and his policies are doing so much damage to kids like that?

Defending the Little Big Labor Guy

The day before Wisconsin voters were to vote on whether to have a recall GOP state senators, Schultz brought his act back to Madison, which gave him an excuse to spout anti-Walker rhetoric while adoring fans cheered on. On the August 8, 2011 Ed Show, Schultz proclaimed: “This is the eye of the storm for the fight for the middle class in this country…For eight months, Wisconsinites have been under attack by the anti-worker policies of Republican rookie governor Scott Walker, and his minions in the State Senate. Ten hours from now, Wisconsin voters will have a chance to go to the polls and recall six Republican state senators who voted to strip collective bargaining and take money out of the pockets of hundreds of thousands of middle class state workers” and “send shock waves into every Republican state house and congressional office in the country.” Schultz then proceeded to introduce, to applause from his live audience, two Democratic state candidates (State Representatives Fred Clark and Sandy Pasch) challenging the incumbent Republicans.

By allowing Ed Schultz to pay back his union buddies with hours of programming to attack Scott Walker MSNBC has demonstrated its willingness to move just beyond opinion journalism into outright campaigning for Democrats and their causes.

As Mitt Romney’s campaign pounds President Obama’s stewardship over the economy, Obama is trying to flip the argument against his Republican opponent by slamming Romney’s own job creation record as governor of Massachusetts.

The Obama campaign’s new line of attack centers on a single statistic: Massachusetts ranked 47th in job growth when Romney was running the state between 2003 and 2007.

During that time, Massachusetts had a net gain of 39,700 nonfarm jobs, an increase of about 1.3 percent, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That was far below the national average of 5.3 percent growth at that time, according to the nonpartisan PolitiFact.com. Only Ohio, Michigan and Louisiana did worse than Massachusetts at the time.

The Romney campaign is not disputing the data. Instead, it’s highlighting a different set of facts: Massachusetts’ overall unemployment rate during Romney’s tenure actually dropped from 5.6 percent in January 2003 to 4.7 percent in January 2007.

“This is another desperate attack from President Obama because he has no positive record to run on,” said Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul. “Mitt Romney created more jobs in the state of Massachusetts than President Obama has for the entire nation.”

The U.S. was losing jobs at a staggering rate of 650,000 per month when Obama took office in January 2009. Over the last six months, the country has been adding an average of 200,000 jobs a month, far more than the 39,700 jobs Massachusetts added under Romney, federal statistics show.

While the United States is no longer losing jobs, it is still a long way from recovering all of the jobs it has lost over the last 39 months. Employment in April stood at 133 million, down by 572,000 from January 2009, when Obama took office. And while the nation’s unemployment has dropped slightly in recent months, it remains at 8.1 percent, up from 7.8 percent at the start of Obama’s term.

However the campaigns slice the statistics, economists say the battle between Obama and Romney over their records on job creation is ultimately a futile exercise.

“There is way too much made out of the job records of different candidates,” said Jeffrey Miron, the director of undergraduate studies at Harvard University’s Department of Economics. “It’s very, very hard to attribute specific improvements, or lack of improvements, in the economy to particular governors or presidents.”

Still, Obama’s campaign plans to make Romney’s jobs record a central issue in the campaign over the next couple months, marking a shift from its recent focus on the number of jobs Romney created — or cut SEmD as CEO of the private equity firm Bain Capital.

Tea Party darling and former state solicitor general Ted Cruz forced Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst into a runoff primary election which will decide who represents the Republican Party in a closely watched Texas Senate race.

Establishment GOP favorite Dewhurst outpaced Cruz handily Tuesday, but fell well short of breaking the 50 percent margin of votes cast needed to avoid a runoff. The pair emerged from a nine-candidate Republican field and will square off in a second round of voting July 31.

That means nine more weeks of a race that had already drawn national attention.A victory by Cruz may mirror an upset similar to Richard Mourdock’s ousting of 36-year Senate veteran Richard Lugar in Indiana.

The millionaire owner of energy consortia, Dewhurst won the endorsement of Gov. Rick Perry and poured $15 million of his own money into his campaign.

[FoxNews.com] The Pakistani doctor sentenced last week to 33 years in prison for helping track Usama bin Laden suffered torture, isolation and starvation during his interrogation, his brother told Fox News -- as he made an appeal from the family for the U.S. Embassy to help fight his legal case. Jamil Afridi told Fox News in an interview that the Embassy so far has not reached out to the family of Dr. Shakil Afridi.

The Pakistani doctor sentenced last week to 33 years in prison for helping track Usama bin Laden suffered torture, isolation and starvation during his interrogation, his brother told Fox News — as he made an appeal from the family for the U.S. Embassy to help fight his legal case.

Jamil Afridi told Fox News in an interview that the Embassy so far has not reached out to the family of Dr. Shakil Afridi.

The brother said the family wants the U.S. to provide lawyers as well as pay the legal bills — as questions surround the dubious legal process used to convict Afridi and hand down what amounted to a life sentence. He also said the broader family of roughly 30 people wants asylum in America.

“The blame has been placed on my brother because of America. We are facing a tough time and they should now support us. We should get justice and protection,” he told Fox News. “Me, my brother, my family don’t have any protection here. When I leave from this place, I don’t know what might happen to me. I don’t know in which guise someone might come for us. I am afraid of the government agencies, the Taliban and terrorists.”

Jamil Afridi said security forces insiders told him his brother was tortured during the interrogation. Afridi was so emaciated when he arrived at prison after last week’s conviction that he has put on five pounds just from being fed properly, his brother said.

The interrogation apparently is over. The brother said that based on what he was told by security forces, Dr. Afridi’s conditions are “paradise” in comparison to what he experienced before.

But even after that ordeal, one Pakistani security official told Fox News that Afridi continues to be kept in isolation in a six-foot-by-four-foot cell.

According to the brother, the family is still being denied visits to him in jail. During the year prior to his sentencing, Afridi did not see sunlight while held by his interrogators, his brother said.

“For one year after he was taken in, we didn’t know if he was alive or dead, which agency had him or what his whereabouts where,” he said, adding that his two sisters were recently turned away when they tried to visit.

Further, he said authorities are “willfully avoiding and stalling” in providing verdict papers, so the family is unable to lodge an appeal. Shakil Afridi has three children — two sons and a daughter.

The details provided by Jamil Afridi likely will add to the pressure on Washington to do more to help the jailed doctor, considering the role he played in helping the CIA track bin Laden before the U.S. raid on his Abbottabad compound.

The Obama administration has condemned the Pakistani government’s decision to imprison Afridi, and claims to be pressing his case with Islamabad. Members of Congress meanwhile have called on the administration to step up their efforts on Afridi’s behalf. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., told FoxNews.com last week that he thinks “the administration hasn’t done anything to indicate they are serious about the demand for this man’s release.”

On the Senate side, a committee last week lodged a protest against the prison sentence by voting to cut Pakistan’s aid by $33 million.

In Pakistan, government officials last Friday described the sentence as payback for how the U.S. went about getting the Al Qaeda leader and shrugged off criticism by American officials — telling the U.S. to stop “over-reacting.”

Rohrabacher, in response, accused the government of being “blinded by their radical Islamic ideology.”

As for Afridi’s current status, a senior security official working inside Peshawar’s penal system with close knowledge of the Afridi case said the inmate is “confident about his future and an appeal.”

“He has become an American hero,” the official said. The official said Afridi is being kept in isolation in his tiny cell, though stressed the conditions were not meant to be a form of solitary confinement punishment.

The official also said the jail is facing a potential riot among its 2,000 inmates because militants among them have gotten word that Afridi is being held there. The wardens have also received death threats from militants, the official said.

The solemn act of honoring those who have fallen in battle is a custom that seems to have faded in importance to our nation over time.

Nowadays, many Americans have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At cemeteries across the country, the graves of the fallen are sadly ignored, and worse, neglected.

While there are towns and cities still planning Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some think the day is for honoring anyone who has died, not just those fallen in service to our country.

Perhaps they do not know how deeply our nation once appreciated those who sacrificed their lives in defense of the principles we hold most dear. Perhaps those very principles of individual sovereignty, freedom and liberty are no longer so important.

It was not always so.

In 1868, on May 5th, Memorial Day, originally called “Decoration Day,” was officially proclaimed by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11.

General Logan asked that we cherish “tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes. Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders.”

But times change. In the 1960s our warriors were not welcomed back from battle with parades and cheers, and the fallen were not honored as they had been in the past.

Perhaps reflecting those times, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed in 1968 as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends – time for fun and recreation, rather than remembrance and reflection.

Thus, from 1971 onwards, the Memorial Day holiday was officially observed on the last Monday in May and became the unofficial start of the summer, with barbecues, blockbuster movie openings and mattress sales.

No less than the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization was later moved to say “Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public’s nonchalant observance of Memorial Day.”

It was around that time as well that defense spending began a steep decline, and in 1976, for the first time, entitlement spending exceeded defense spending. It is a trend that has rapidly accelerated, with spending on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid more than double that of national defense, a core constitutional function of government.

Nonetheless, the United States of America still possesses the greatest military force the world has ever known. Our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen volunteer to protect and defend this country and all its citizens, and do so with honor, integrity and excellence. Our nation continually asks them to do more and more, with less and less.

We must never forget why we have, and why we need our military. Our armed forces exist solely to ensure our nation is safe, so that each and every one of us can sleep soundly at night, knowing we have “guardians at the gate.”

Those who serve today deserve our gratitude, those who are returning from the battlefield deserve our open arms, and those who will never return deserve our thoughts, tributes and remembrance.

In 2000, President Clinton passed a resolution asking all Americans to observe a “National Moment of Remembrance” at 3 p.m. on each Memorial Day “to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all.” I know what I will be doing at 3 p.m. this Memorial Day. I hope I will not be alone.

For as General Logan proclaimed, “Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.”

They were steadfast and loyal.

[LibertyNewsOnline.com] I have this theory about Barack Obama. I think he’s led a kind of make-believe life in which money was provided and doors were opened because at some point early on somebody or some group took a look at this tall, good looking, half-white, half-black, young man with an exotic African/Muslim name and concluded he could be guided toward a life in politics where his facile speaking skills could even put him in the White House.

In a very real way, he has been a young man in a very big hurry. Who else do you know has written two memoirs before the age of 45? “Dreams of My Father” was published in 1995 when he was only 34 years old. The “Audacity of Hope” followed in 2006. If, indeed, he did write them himself. There are some who think that his mentor and friend, Bill Ayers, a man who calls himself a “communist with a small ‘c’” was the real author.

I have this theory about Barack Obama.

His political skills consisted of rarely voting on anything that might be deemed controversial. He went from a legislator in the Illinois legislature to the Senator from that state because he had the good fortune of having Mayor Daley’s formidable political machine at his disposal.

He was in the U.S. Senate so briefly that his bid for the presidency was either an act of astonishing self-confidence or part of some greater game plan that had been determined before he first stepped foot in the Capital. How, many must wonder, was he selected to be a 2004 keynote speaker at the Democrat convention that nominated John Kerry when virtually no one had ever even heard of him before?

He outmaneuvered Hillary Clinton in primaries. He took Iowa by storm. A charming young man, an anomaly in the state with a very small black population, he oozed “cool” in a place where agriculture was the antithesis of cool. He dazzled the locals. And he had an army of volunteers drawn to a charisma that hid any real substance.

And then he had the great good fortune of having the Republicans select one of the most inept candidates for the presidency since Bob Dole. And then John McCain did something crazy. He picked Sarah Palin, an unknown female governor from the very distant state of Alaska. It was a ticket that was reminiscent of 1984’s Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro and they went down to defeat.

The mainstream political media fell in love with him. It was a schoolgirl crush with febrile commentators like Chris Mathews swooning then and now over the man. The venom directed against McCain and, in particular, Palin, was extraordinary.

Now, nearly a full year into his first term, all of those gilded years leading up to the White House have left him unprepared to be President. Left to his own instincts, he has a talent for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. It swiftly became a joke that he could not deliver even the briefest of statements without the ever-present Tele-Prompters.

Far worse, however, is his capacity to want to “wish away” some terrible realities, not the least of which is the Islamist intention to destroy America and enslave the West. Any student of history knows how swiftly Islam initially spread. It knocked on the doors of Europe, having gained a foothold in Spain.

The great crowds that greeted him at home or on his campaign “world tour” were no substitute for having even the slightest grasp of history and the reality of a world filled with really bad people with really bad intentions.

Oddly and perhaps even inevitably, his political experience, a cakewalk, has positioned him to destroy the Democrat Party’s hold on power in Congress because in the end it was never about the Party. It was always about his communist ideology, learned at an early age from family, mentors, college professors, and extreme leftist friends and colleagues.

Obama is a man who could deliver a snap judgment about a Boston police officer who arrested an “obstreperous” Harvard professor-friend, but would warn Americans against “jumping to conclusions” about a mass murderer at Fort Hood who shouted “Allahu Akbar.” The absurdity of that was lost on no one. He has since compounded this by calling the Christmas bomber “an isolated extremist” only to have to admit a day or two later that he was part of an al Qaeda plot.

He is a man who could strive to close down our detention facility at Guantanamo even though those released were known to have returned to the battlefield against America. He could even instruct his Attorney General to afford the perpetrator of 9/11 a civil trial when no one else would ever even consider such an obscenity. And he is a man who could wait three days before having anything to say about the perpetrator of yet another terrorist attack on Americans and then have to elaborate on his remarks the following day because his first statement was so lame.

The pattern repeats itself. He either blames any problem on the Bush administration or he naively seeks to wish away the truth.

Knock, knock. Anyone home? Anyone there? Barack Obama exists only as the sock puppet of his handlers, of the people who have maneuvered and manufactured this pathetic individual’s life.

When anyone else would quickly and easily produce a birth certificate, this man has spent over a million dollars to deny access to his. Most other documents, the paper trail we all leave in our wake, have been sequestered from review. He has lived a make-believe life whose true facts remain hidden.

We laugh at the ventriloquist’s dummy, but what do you do when the dummy is President of the United States of America?

Some astoundingly grim news on the “economic recovery” front: half of American households are receiving government funds to support themselves. No matter which way you slice it, this number isn’t good news for the Obama administration — they can spin the jobs numbers by ignoring the number of people who dropped out of the workforce, but this statistic is pretty straightforward.

The 49.1% of the population in a household that gets benefits is up from 30% in the early 1980s and 44.4% as recently as the third quarter of 2008.

The increase in recent years is likely due in large part to the lingering effects of the recession. As of early 2011, 15% of people lived in a household that received food stamps, 26% had someone enrolled in Medicaid and 2% had a member receiving unemployment benefits. Families doubling up to save money or pool expenses also is likely leading to more multigenerational households. But even without the effects of the recession, there would be a larger reliance on government.

The Census data show that 16% of the population lives in a household where at least one member receives Social Security and 15% receive or live with someone who gets Medicare. There is likely a lot of overlap, since Social Security and Medicare tend to go hand in hand, but those percentages also are likely to increase as the Baby Boom generation ages.

It seems that Newt Gingrich’s nickname for President Obama rings true: he really is the “food stamp president.” More people than ever are relying on the state to support their families, and that’s a major indictment on Obama’s first term.

Furthermore, this puts even more pressure on the economic aspect of the presidential election. There’s no way to cut the deficit until fewer people are on the government payroll — unless, of course, Congress imposes massive (and sure to be massively unpopular) tax hikes.

Really, if this is the direction we’re headed, how many people want to keep going “forward?”

[FoxNews.com] The U.S. Postal Service announced late Friday it would offer thousands of mail-handlers a $15,000 incentive to retire early, the most recent attempt by the financially-strapped agency to cut costs and stay open for business.
The U.S. Postal Service announced late Friday it would offer thousands of mail-handlers a $15,000 incentive to retire early, the most recent attempt by the financially-strapped agency to cut costs and stay open for business.

The voluntary offer was extended to roughly 45,000 full-time union employees. It is part of the agency’s larger plan to cut its workforce by 150,000 over the next three years and close hundreds of mail-procession centers.

Postal officials said such changes are necessary as a result of the recession and because Americans continue to pay bills and perform other, similar tasks online, instead of doing them through the mail.

Officials said 60 percent of Americans now pay their bills online, compared to just 5 percent in 2000. They also said mail volume peaked at 213 billion in 2006, but has since plummeted by more than 25 percent.

Official also have said the congressional mandate to pre-fund retirement health care benefits has contributed to financial problems.

The agency reportedly lost more than $6 billion in the first two quarters of fiscal 2012.
Eligible employees must decide by July and leave in August. Those who accept the offer will receive the money in two installments – December 2012 and December 2013.

A similar, pro-rated deal is being offered to many part-time employees. Handlers perform such tasks as sorting mail in processing centers as well as loading and unloading trucks.

The National Postal Mail Handlers Union said the deal is “intended to provide a financial cushion and added peace of mind for mail handlers who might be prepared to move on to the next chapter of their lives.”

The agency also wanted to close some low-volume rural post offices to save money, but announced earlier this month, amid public outcry, to instead reduce hours of operation.
