GOP Begins Search for Broad Deal On Budget

[WSJ.com] WASHINGTON—Senior Republicans in Congress, frustrated over their inability to strike a deal to reopen the government, began shifting from their drive to undercut the 2010 health-care law, which has been the central element of the dispute, toward a broader budget deal. Continue reading

Here We Go: House to Vote on Temporary Budget That Defunds Obamacare

[Townhall.com] Speaker John Boehner huddled with House Republicans this morning at the Capitol. According to several sources in the closed-door meeting, the speaker confirmed his plan to bring a continuing resolution to the floor that funds the government and defunds Obamacare. “On the CR, we know what the position of this conference is,” Boehner said, speaking before his colleagues. Reid and Cantor on Collision Course; Government Shutdown Near?

“We always respond to disasters in this country, and we’re going to respond to this one in an appropriate way based on documentation that has been received,” the Kentucky Republican predicted, adding, “Exactly how we get from where we are to the end of the trail by Thursday night, I couldn’t tell you, but I can confidently tell you we are going to respond to those in need.” Continue reading

Dems Say Congress ‘On the Door Step’ of a Spending Deal as GOP Emphasizes Cuts

With just a week to go before the government runs out of money, Reid said lawmakers would only consider a short-term CR “if it’s necessary to give us time to do paperwork.” No buying time if there are genuine policy differences, in other words. It seems clear, though, that some of the riders must be adopted in order to strike a compromise, particularly if Speaker Boehner is to sell $33 billion in cuts as the best deal he and fellow Republicans could possibly get in a divided Congress. Obama Budget Underestimates Deficits by $2 Trillion

“Beyond FY2011 funding decisions, we urge you to engage in a broader discussion about a comprehensive deficit reduction package. Specifically, we hope that the discussion will include discretionary spending cuts, entitlement changes and tax reform,” the letter states, adding, “By approaching these negotiations comprehensively, with a strong signal of support from you, we believe that we can achieve consensus on these important fiscal issues. This would send a powerful message to Americans that Washington can work together to tackle this critical issue.” Continue reading

54 House Republicans Defect on Spending Bill

Also opposing the bill was Rep. Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican who said the stopgap measure plays into Democrats’ hands because postponing a decision on the entire 2011 budget makes it likely the fight will merge with an upcoming battle over increasing the federal debt limit. He said that debate should focus on bigger changes to government spending, such as cuts in entitlement programs such as Medicare. Continue reading
