obama_fpsstRepublicans are reportedly ready to vote to hike the debt ceiling without any of the major deficit-related concessions they’ve been pushing for from Democrats, and budget-watchers will soon turn their attention to the looming sequestration spending cuts (from the Budget Control Act, or BCA) scheculed to take place on March 1 and the expiration of the continuing resolution budget that the federal government has been operating on, scheduled to take place March 28.Progressives, however, have been declaring the deficit problem “mostly solved.” A report from the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found that, including all BCA cuts and the additional tax revenues from the January 1 fiscal cliff legislation, the U.S. is close to being on a stable ten-year budget path.

Ryan Candidacy Puts Debts, Deficits Front and Center

Liberals who are “giddy” at the prospects of Mitt Romney’s selection of Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan are in for a rude and sober awakening when they realize the strategic genius behind the decision.

Team Romney’s strategy?  Lure the Obama campaign into attacking Ryan’s “Path to Prosperity” deficit reduction plan as a means to frame the 2012 election as a battle over the economic consequences of debt and deficits.  If Obama strategists David Axelrod and David Plouffe take the bait, Mitt Romney will win.

President Obama’s much-anticipated speech Wednesday aimed at taking the reins of the fierce debt debate on Capitol Hill has House Republican leaders sharpening their knives and some members of a bipartisan group of senators feeling a bit frustrated.

Members of the so-called Gang of Six, already under the gun to craft a 10-year debt-and-deficit-reduction package, are feeling more pressure with Obama planning to outline his vision for getting the nation’s fiscal house in order.

AP – House Speaker John Boehner, center, gestures while speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill April 6.

House Republicans are planning to bring yet another stopgap budget bill to the floor in a bid to avert a government shutdown, as negotiations over a spending package for the rest of the year falter.

The proposal would be the third short-term budget bill in two months. The prospect of voting on another stopgap has frustrated lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, some of whom have vowed to oppose one. But while dozens of GOP members defected the last time around, House Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., told Fox News he has enough GOP support to pass this bill without any Democrats.

“We don’t need one Democratic vote,” he said.

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said earlier Wednesday that he would be willing to help Republicans whip up support for a short-term spending plan. However, he also said he opposes the specific package that House Speaker John Boehner has been pushing — a one-week bill that would cut $12 billion, while also funding the military for the rest of the year. And Boehner said Wednesday that’s exactly the plan he wants to put on the floor.
