New Fed Study Suggests Net Job Creation From Porkulus Was … ZERO

Backers of the stimulus have always had to contend with two big problems: The first is measurement. How do we know how many jobs were created, saved, funded, whatever? Do we count new permanent jobs, or partially funded contractors, or grocery clerks whose paychecks are dependent on added business from stimulus-funded workers across town? And even if you can verify that those jobs are funded by stimulus money somehow, how do you know that the same jobs would not have been created in the absence of the stimulus? It’s a thankless task, and the administration has tended to respond by skirting the issue and relying on models that don’t really measure output at all. Wilson’s study, with its state-by-state comparisons, attempts to partly address this problem. Continue reading

NRCC response ad: Grayson a National Embarrassment

It doesn’t surprise us, but it probably surprises most of the people in Florida’s 8th CD who voted for him the first time. Hopefully, they won’t make that same mistake again.

Update: That should have been the NRCC, not the NRSC. I’ve corrected the headline and the lead paragraph. Thanks to Dustin S for the heads-up. Continue reading

Wow: Whitman up eight points over Brown in CA? [Go Meg!]

If Whitman picks up real momentum, it will help Carly Fiorina, especially if Whitman’s money gets out the vote in November. Running two retreads at the top of the ballot may prove fatal for Democrats in this cycle. Continue reading

Reid: No illegals in the workforce in Nevada?

aving Harry Reid insist that Nevada doesn’t have illegal immigrants in its workforce is just icing on the cake of cluelessness that Obama baked and delivered. If Reid is this out of touch with the facts on the ground in Nevada, he’s been in Washington far too long — and he can expect that Sharron Angle is already producing a new TV ad to make that same point. Continue reading

The “tyranny of constituency”?

Certainly a case can be made against gerrymandering. It allows state legislatures the ability to carve out “safe” districts that reduce accountability, except in rare primary challenges to sitting incumbents of the favored party. That process has become a little less rare in this cycle, however, which NPR fails to point out. Continue reading

CNN: Americans too stupid to comprehend Obama’s genius, or something

As it happens, I have some experience with reading-comprehension levels, from my days in the defense industry. When writing technical manuals, we had to calculate (by hand in those days) the average reading level in order to satisfy contractual obligations with the various service branches. Depending on the project and the target readership, those levels ranged between 8th- and 12th-grade levels. A grade level of 9.8 would have been about right for most of our projects, hardly qualifying as too intellectual. Continue reading

Helen Thomas’ agency dumps her as client

Perhaps Helen Thomas hoped that her apology would suffice in tamping down the furor over her videotaped rant telling the Jews to “get the hell out of Palestine.” It turns out that even her own agents didn’t buy it. Nine Speaker announced that it has dropped Thomas as a client, while Lanny Davis blasted the doyenne of the White House Press Corps as “an anti-Semitic bigot”:

Senior White House Press Corps member Helen Thomas may have apologized for her recent on-camera remarks calling on Jews to “get the hell out of Palestine” and go home to Europe, but her reputation seems beyond repair amid the abounding calls for her resignation.

In the wake of the incident, Thomas’ agent Nine Speaker Inc. announced that it would no longer represent her. Continue reading

The definition of “show trial”

Not only will we be right back where we started, it will expose the federal trial as nothing more than a show trial. Show trials are conducted by despots and dictators to give only a thin veneer of legality to political detentions and executions. Continue reading
