White House: Obama ‘Will Not Sign’ a Deal Unless It Increases Taxes

(CNSNews.com) – White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said today that no matter what else happens President Barack Obama–who is the only modern president other than Franklin Roosevelt to serve in four years when federal spending topped 24 percent of GDP–will not sign a deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff that will arrive at the end of this year unless that deal increases taxes. Jobs Are Up, But Not Nearly Enough

Meanwhile, aggregate hours worked rose by only one-tenth of a percent in October and only 1.7 percent over the past three months at an annual rate. So even when you combine hours worked with hourly earnings, there’s still a shortfall in real income.

The best part of the jobs report is the recent surge in the household survey, which picked up 277,000 in October and has averaged 335,000 over the past three months. This is a good sign for small business, and it’s responsible for the small drop in unemployment to 9 percent from 9.1 percent. Continue reading

#OccupyWallSt: Let’s Have an Anarchist College!

Just because the #OccupyWallSt crowd is drowning in student loans and unable to find jobs in Obama’s economy doesn’t mean they’ve given up on higher education completely. If one worthless degree in gender or culture studies doesn’t cut it in today’s competitive marketplace, why not add two or three more? Well, the #OccupyWallSt crowd is ON TOP OF IT! Continue reading

An Economic Message from the Census Bureau: We’re Screwed

Even the rich have suffered (really). While median incomes stagnated in the 2000s, the highest-earning Americans saw their incomes grow throughout the decade. The recession and its aftermath have wiped out those income gains at the top. In 2010, income at the lower bound of the top 10 percent of earners was $138,923 — a 3.5 percent drop from its pre-recession peak. Continue reading

Government Looks to Past, Free Enterprise to Future

With the benefit of hindsight, it seems that our leaders, in both the Bush and the Obama administrations, responded to crises and challenges all too often with measures that attempted to revive the old pre-financial crisis economy rather than with policies that would allow a new economy to grow.

As in Paulson’s comment, the thinking seems to have been that if we can just get things back in place, then we can attack the underlying problems. Continue reading

Minneapolis Fed Data Compares Reaganomics and Obamanomics

None of this should be interpreted to mean Reagan is ready for sainthood. He made plenty of compromises during his eight years in office, and some of them were detours in the wrong direction. But the general direction was positive, which is why he’s the best President of my lifetime.* Continue reading

“Mancession” Threatens American Dream

Others suggest the concept of a “mancession” is simply overblown — if not short lived. Writing in the liberal Huffington Post, Bryce Covert points out that a U.S. Conference of Mayors study found, “half of the projected new green jobs will be in heavily male dominated areas, such as engineering, consulting, manufacturing, construction and forestry.” Continue reading

If You Want To Get Rich, Don’t Marry Money, Run For Congress

I am not contending that there is anything illegal going on, nor is my contention that the average 16% increase has anything to do with violating congressional rules. There is however, something wrong when people go to Washington DC to represent their constituencies but end up enriching themselves. At the very least it suggest one of the reasons why Members of Congress are perceived to be out of touch with Americans. Their income is going up while the rest of us are seeing a decline. Continue reading

Economic Lessons From the Summer Swoon

And here’s another hitch in the story. Using the break-even TIPS, the Federal Reserve’s zero target rate is really minus-1.7 percent, which is the same sort of negative real interest rate we had in the early and mid-2000s. This is undoubtedly why Kansas City Fed president Thomas Hoenig is worried about a new boom-bust cycle. Continue reading
