The New March Madness: Super Tuesday

[FrontPorchPolitics.com]

Written on March 5, 2012 at 9:22 am by

While college basketball teams and fans prepare to be swept away in the fanatical celebration that has come to be known as March Madness another competition is already underway and about to get a bit more intense.

Super Tuesday is set to kick off tomorrow in 10 states across the nation. The competition is, of course, a heated contest between the 4 GOP candidates: Former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney, Former Senator Rick Santorum, Texas Congressman Ron Paul and Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.

Coming off of this weekend’s Washington caucus it appears that Romney has the momentum. However, he will be involved in several slug fests in the south for sure and potentially Ohio will be a tight race as well.

Ron Paul gained momentum in Washington as well, besting Santorum by 1%. The momentum of the Paul campaign has been solidly gaining over the past four years and continues to grow as his message resonates with voters.

Rick Santorum, according to the Romney campaign, “flunked” a test of organizational strength. Santorum didn’t file complete slates of delegates in Tennessee or Ohio and he failed to get on the ballot in Virginia and the District of Columbia. With all of this, at the present he looks to give Romney a run for his money in this race.

Two weeks ago, Fox News reported that President Obama held statistically significant leads over his possible Republican opponents in a series of swing state polls.  Today, hope and change:

In the poll, Obama lags the two leading Republican rivals in the 12 states likely to determine the outcome of a close race in November:

•Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum tops Obama 50%-45% in the swing states. Nationwide, Santorum’s lead narrows to 49%-46%.

•Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney edges Obama 48%-46% in the swing states. Nationwide, they are tied at 47% each.

The battleground states surveyed include Michigan — where Tuesday’s primary has become a critical showdown between Romney and Santorum — as well as Ohio and Virginia, which vote next week on Super Tuesday. The other swing states are Colorado, Iowa, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

By David A. Patten

Type the word “Santorum” in Google and you won’t find his campaign website or other positive, useful information about him in the first, second or even third entries. In fact, almost every entry on the all-important first page of “Santorum” results — the one most users see — is laden with nasty, sometimes vulgar attacks. The very first entry for his name offers a “definition” that reads “Santorum [1.] The frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex. [ 2.]Senator Rick Santorum.”The definition is repeated in another entry in the popular website Urban Dictionary, which is a compendium of street and often-vulger slang terms.Other first page Google entries include those with headings such as “Santorum Exposed,” “Despicable: Rick Santorum’s Wife Uses Her Sick Child To Lie About …,” and “Rick Santorum’s Anal Sex Problem.”Buried amid the smut is entry number 7, which offers a link to Santorum’s official campaign website. Is Google at war with Rick Santorum?

Arizona debate preview: The stakes for the four candidates

When Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer parlayed the leverage that she had by threatening to move Arizona’s primary up and cause chaos in the primary calendar to get Arizona a nationally televised GOP debate, she ensured that all eyes would be on her state.

With Mitt Romney struggling in Michigan, Santorum challenging Romney’s front-runner status, Gingrich needing to climb back into the race and Paul being Paul, tonight’s debate will be critical in influencing not only the next three weeks in the GOP primary but perhaps being a determinative debate.

Here are the stakes for the four candidates going into the debate:

SANTORUM SKEWERS CHARLIE ROSE OVER CONTRACEPTION ‘GOTCHA’ QUESTION

It’s not over ’til it’s over!

Coming up from the underdog, Senator Rick Santorum is gaining momentum like wildfire.  Some people are calling him the new ‘frontrunner’.  Check out this  Google Trends chart from today, February 18, 2012.  This is not a poll, but a significant chatter meter of how candidates are doing.

While polls, when properly calculated, are move scientific, it is obvious that all polling is not on the same page.  We believe that there is some affecting of bias by the mainstream media.  We have recently found out that Media Matters has been linked to access to the White House perhaps for the purpose of generating a ‘consistent’ front on all the networks, just like in the last election (2008).

By God, it’s not going to work this time.  The American people know what you guys are doing.  People like George Soros, David Brock, etc., are in bed with the Obama Administration to pull together the same ‘slick trick’ they did last time.

Not gonna work.  This time we not only have the record of a failed president, but we have full knowledge of the intentions of this administration.  We know that the job numbers are being cooked to look good on the surface, but in reality, we know that the real number much higher.

The ‘tax cut’ Congress passed is a bad idea. It’s not a tax cut, its taking money from Social Security receipts and calling it a tax cut.  Why is it that Social Security has always been the victim of legislative robbery?  We know that Social Security is funded by current, on-going tax receipts from Social Security taxing.  Where is the money coming from to replace those funds?

It’s continuing to be obvious that President Obama is secretly and willingly trying to crash this economy. This is the worst ‘tax and spend’ administration since Woodrow Wilson!  It’s even worse than the Carter administration.  We need a REAL CONSERVATIVE.  We believe Sen.Rick Santorum is that man to get this nation back in the direction it should be going.

Rasmussen Nat’l Poll Showing Second Gingrich Boomlet?

After a brilliant debate performance by Newt Gingrich on Monday, some wondered whether it was too late in the cycle for a second bounce.  According to a Rasmussen poll taken yesterday of 1,000 likely GOP primary voters, Mitt Romney’s team may want to keep the party favors in the box for a little while longer:

The race for the Republican presidential nomination is now nearly even with Mitt Romney still on top but Newt Gingrich just three points apart.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters nationwide shows Romney with 30% support and Gingrich with 27% of the vote. Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, who was running second two weeks ago, has now dropped to 15%.

Wrap-up from Waterloo: Perry embraced, Bachmann falls a little flat

Governor Rick Perry, Rep. Michele Bachmann, and former Senator Rick Santorum met in Waterloo, Iowa this evening to woo Blackhawk County Republicans and fight for national attention.  The media wondered whether Iowans would forgive Perry for snubbing the Ames straw poll and whether Bachmann could build on her win yesterday in the event.  And while some questions were answered, others will start arising from the performances.

Perry made a good start with a friendly crowd.  He used a mobile, dynamic style and emphasized the commonalities between the agricultural states of Texas and Iowa.  Perry spoke of the difficult farming life and his formative years in small-town Texas, as well as spending a surprising amount of time talking about his military experience.  At one point, he got a rousing cheer from the crowd when he pledged to make the presidency regain the respect of men and women in uniform. Perry also talked about jobs, and how his record shows that he can fix what’s ailing the nation.  The crowd reacted with enthusiasm, interrupting Perry a number of times with applause and cheers.
